Those in the lobby did not have a moment's hesitation in firing at the unexpected guests, but most of the policemen had no idea of their weakness:
They were aiming at different points of the body, without following any logic.
"In the head you must hit them! IN THE HEAD!" exclaimed Liz, taking down her target like a sack of potatoes.
"How on earth did they break through the barricades in such a short time?!" retorted one of the policemen, trying to take aim, although his hands were trembling.
"They probably underestimated the possibility that they could be caught up!" Vince commented in response, drawing his magnum from his armpit holster....
And hitting one of the undead straight in the skull.
The zombie fell without a head to support it anymore, blown apart by the large-caliber shot.
Noting that that system was effective, Branagh gave repeated orders to hit them in the head, but the difference in numbers and lack of experience were already making themselves felt.
It was not long before a zombie reached its first victim.
"No! Please! I don't want to die... argh!"
A young policeman found himself on him and fell backward under his assault. His victim's choked screams ceased shortly thereafter, giving way to the sound of eviscerated flesh.
There were many of them, the abominations that had ravenously lashed out at the unfortunate man, covering any noise with the din of violently bitten flesh. They were mauling him in a manner not unlike a pack of hyenas pouncing on a carcass.
"Leave him alone, you freaks!" exclaimed one of the colleagues, firing his entire magazine at that mass....
Without even realizing that he had run out of ammo.
The only thing he could hope for, when one of the zombies pounced on him, was to die quickly.
A single bite on the jugular was enough to kill him on the spot, while the undead also advanced on the raised floor, where everyone tried to defend themselves in any way.
The zombie who had bitten the poor man in the jugular lifted its head suddenly and emitted a long, hoarse, agonized groan, its bloodstained mouth from which shreds of flesh still dangled.
Meg almost felt her legs give out on the spot, but she held herself upright enough to point the gun with trembling hands.
"Go ahead, shoot him. He's not human anymore." urged her, at that moment in a shooting position to accurately hit the heads of all zombies that came within range.
Meg let out a cry and started shooting, although keeping her eyes closed in impression, with the result that she was not sure if she had hit the targets.
The zombie was first hit in the chest a couple of times, then a shot hit him right in the head and he fell backwards.
However, this did not in the slightest interrupt the onslaught of the other undead, who were approaching inexorably toward the survivors, now forced as well to retreat by climbing up the stairs, reaching the balcony.
"Bad time to send SWAT out to get themselves killed," Marvin commented; "If they pass the lobby, civilians will be in danger."
"You must have thought for a backup plan in cases like this, right?!" exclaimed Alyssa, as she was reloading her weapon.
"I've sent some officers to check for alternative escape routes," he replied, continuing to fire; "They haven't been back for hours... the only thing possible now is to hold on."
