They ran without even wanting to look back, ignoring the presence of possible creatures in the midst of the fog...
Indeed, none of those monsters until then attacked them, or tried to attack.
"Bunch of psychopaths! I hope they croak from first to last!" exclaimed Liz with ill tempered anger.
"Don't stop!" exclaimed Vince, continuing to look around:
He could hear beast-like cries from somewhere, and furious beats of wings, followed by distorted phrases, even more unintelligible than those emitted by the normal undead of that place.
Even if they were not attacking or not really coming forward, they were present in their midst....
Or perhaps it was the work of that creek monster?
Was it trying to brainwash them? Was what they perceived around there nothing more than hallucinations used for the purpose of leading them into a trap?
He shook his head over and over again:
Those things were real. He had seen the dead bodies on the streets, the blood. It was all real. It was not a game!
That's right! Just like that poor wretch who tried to kill me after turning into one of them!
Transformed.
One thing he still could not understand:
Those people could not breathe in the crimson mist, or they would turn in a moment...
But then why were he and the others being spared from it?
Why could they still remain human while others died?
Nothing made sense anymore.
But the most important thing at that moment was to get away as far as possible....
To go where? Straight into the hands of the military? Or to get lost in the middle of the Arklay Mountains and wait for one of those walking monsters to find us?
Or would the wild animals kill us first?"Liz!"
A sudden cry from Rhonda brought him back to normal:
Looking ahead, he saw the policewoman holding on to a fence with one hand, breathing hard.
At her side, both JR and Meg, intent on helping her stand up.
"I-I can do it! I just feel a little tired!"
"Come on, don't give up now." Jonny urged her, trying to take her burden, resting an arm on her neck.
"Look out!"
Something launched itself straight at them at great speed:
He was one of those four-legged beings!
Immediately, Rhonda stepped in, using the pitchfork stolen from the Horde faithful to interrupt the impetuous charge of that skinned monster.
The beast took a quick leap at her, jaws wide open.
The punk ended up using the hilt of the pitchfork to block the jaw of the canine, which had come down on her by weight, dragging her to the ground.
"Get off! LEAVE ME ALONE!" she exclaimed, trying to resist the animal's assault.
From the way it snarled to try to bite her face, breaking the pitchfork, it looked like a ravenous beast.
It was then that Vince took the gamble:
He grasped the belly of the beast, trying to pull it weightlessly away from the top of Rhonda.
