After making sure the coast was clear, the two survivors quietly exited the hunting store.
The sound of wings of some of those flying monsters could still be heard, but they seemed to be far enough away to pass by without being spotted or attacked.
"Those monsters... Were they already on the loose when you arrived?" asked Vince, following her around the alleys, holding up the rifle in his hands.
"Yes... they were already here. They attacked me shortly after arriving near the motel, and they're pretty tough to punch, too!"
A moment of silence for both of them, due to how absurd it had been to face one of those things with one's bare hands.
"Yes, I know! I was rash! It's just that they caught me by surprise because of their quickness!" exclaimed Liz in response, chuckling sarcastically.
"Four-legged behemoths and winged bastards... awesome..." muttered Vince, sighing in irritation...
Before noticing on the horizon as a large open clearing in the middle of the road.
A small park for children, given the presence of a swing, too, nearby.
"Let's move past that playground, and we'll be in front of the school!" the woman exclaimed, pointing to what appeared to be an empty spot beyond the rides because of the fog.
"I'm right behind you, Liz..." he reassured her, rushing forward past the thick fog....
And passing together with the policewoman through the middle of that playground, whose wooden and iron rides were abandoned and rusty with age.
It was as if it had been years since a child had last climbed on it.
Beyond, it stood a huge structure at least three floors high, complete with a raised entrance and a stone signboard that read:
'St. Juste Elementary School'
The building itself, in turn, appeared to be at least 20 years old, with signs of wear and tear that almost indicated that no one had ever done any maintenance.
It looked almost ... rusty, unnaturally colored.
"Let's hope that the children are at naptime." murmured Vince; "because I don't feel like babysitting."
"A couple of slaps on the butt and it all works out..." Liz commented sarcastically.
"There seems to be nothing out here. I can't even hear the beating of the wings of
those monsters." replied Archer, taking a few steps toward the entrance of the school...
When he was caught off guard by something:
A strange noise in the background, like a mixture between a distant rumble and the distorted cry of a baby...
And the fog gave way to the darkness.
"What the hell? You can't see anything out of the palm of your hand. Liz, are you still there?"
The policewoman gave no answer, but Vince could hear the crying getting louder and louder...
Until he was pervaded by some images that rapidly flowed before his eyes... And the voice of an infant:
"Join us. Or die..."
"What the fuck...?! Who are you?!" he exclaimed almost immediately, holding his head for a second.
Whatever it was, it suddenly disappeared as soon as the mechanic made that exclamation, as if there had never been anything but darkness and silence.
