"𝐉𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐈𝐒 𝐃𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐄."
The serpent cow—Esmeralda knew this story, she did: Ophiotaurus—glanced towards her and lit up with the brilliance of one thousand suns. A mental battle raged so clearly through its features. It couldn't decide whether or not to stay with Percy or to mysteriously saunter to another promising guest.
"Bessie?" Percy questioned before shaking his head quickly, "I'm sorry, not now."
"Moooo!"
'My name isn't Bessie, my Lord! It is Ophiotaurus!'
"Percy, his name is not Bessie," Esmeralda shook her head slowly, still trying desperately to wrap her head around whatever new development her brain was undergoing. She hadn't had to ability to talk to mythical creatures before, much less a cow—technically speaking, a bull—not that she's had any major interactions with one, nothing further than seeing pictures of cattle on a school slide presentation, "He says it's Ophiotaurus."
Grover gasped, "You, too!?"
"You can speak cow!?"
"To be fair, what Ophiotaurus is speaking is an old form of animal speech." Grover inputted generously—not that is cleared any confusion, "So Esmeralda could either be speaking that or, like you said, cow. Or uh, bull. He's a bull. That..could potentially give us a hand in who your mom is."
Ophiotaurus 'merred' lowly at the mention of Esmeralda's unknown parentage. In a strange sort of way, he preened himself against Percy's shoe with a bit of swoon behind the nuzzle. None of the group had ever seen a smitten bull–serpent before, but they were sure the way he was acting was a worthy representation, "Mooooo!!!"
'Miss Esmeralda's momma,' He drawled out affectionately, 'She's so amazing! She helped me to you! Such a kind, thoughtful, amazing, lovely—'
"Okay, okay," Esmeralda crouched beside Ophiotaurus to stop his lovesick rambling. All rapt attention instantly redirected to her. He laid his head upon the wooden pier and gazed up earnestly, "Why is it you need our help?"
