𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇 is not a foreign experience to half bloods.
Death is not a foreign experience to Esmeralda.
Ever since she was a young girl, she's seen it. Noticed it. Encountered it.
Her grandmother's passing when she was six, and her grandfather's only a week later—a day before her birthday. Agonizing despair from losing the love of his life led him to his miserable end.
Her father had encouraged her to go next door to surprise him; to try to cheer him up. Instead of cheering him up however, she found him in his home, on his deceased wife's recliner, surrounded by every bottle of alcohol he could find. He drank himself to death. She noticed the smell first, and his corpse second.
There was a gun on the coffee table, but the official autopsy listed alcohol poisoning. He didn't get the chance to blow his brains out.
Another instance of many was an example already given: her teacher's untimely demise at the wheels of a car.
Still, Esmeralda believes none of those experiences could've ever prepared her for this.
"What did she want with you guys?" Bianca questioned, circling around Percy and Esmeralda to hand off their stranded bags. They accepted their belongings with a refreshing feeling of relief. If Ares dropped them off so far away from their original campsite without them, there would have been some issues.
Beside her, a blush blossomed onto Percy's face all the way to the tips of his ears. He desperately refused to look in Esmeralda's direction. Who knows what he would spout if he did—nonsense that wouldn't even be comprehensible, he imagined, "Oh, um...not sure. She said to be careful in the junkyard. And to not to pick up anything."
"The goddess of love would not go out of her way to tell thee only that. Be careful. Aphrodite has led many heroes astray." Zoe spoke with a narrowed gaze. Esmeralda had suspicion this may be from experience, but who was she to stick her nose where it didn't belong, "And her words to thee, Esmeralda?"
