I took extra inspiration from Marissa Meyer's book Renegades (favourite author question mark👀).

════════════════════════════Fye was, as others described, a ray of sunshine. She was a girl with tons of energy, always smiling and, quite literally, bouncing everywhere she went.
As an infant, her eyes were always wide open and filled with curiosity. She was always looking around, searching for new things to stuff into her mouth. Not the most worry-free activity in the eyes of a parent.
As she grew, learning to walk and run, so did her energetic spirit. She spent all her time going up and down the stairs, walking in all the rooms, climbing on everything she could. Little Fye was unstoppable.
But things took a turn when she learned to speak. She was always calling for someone, someone her parents had never met. Every single day, she would call his name.
Ember.
Whenever she was alone, suddenly, she wasn't. Ember was always there with her. At first, her parents didn't worry. Imaginary friends aren't unheard of. Their daughter was four and a lover of fantasy. What was so bizarre about having a dragon slayer for a friend?
There was nothing when you thought about it. Besides, Fye would grow out of it, like all kids did. But years passed, and Ember never left.
Fye went to school, eventually graduating college, all while talking to her friend, Ember. And years later, when her life had started as an adult, she showed her parents something incredible.
It was sudden, with no context.
Fye put her hand on the table and set it ablaze. Her parents froze in shock, unbelieving. Some people awakened their cores late, but that didn't apply to Fye. She had started the fire and put it out without trouble.
There was only one conclusion: their daughter was one of the few children worldwide born with an elemental core. And by some miracle, she had kept it hidden since birth.
Well, Ember had kept it hidden since birth. Fye explained that Ember had suppressed her core's activity from birth. It was thanks to him that she could live a normal life. And although they couldn't see him, her parents asked her to thank him. Despite their past worries, they could tell Ember meant no harm, acting almost like a guardian angel to their daughter.
There was nothing their family had to fear.
"Wow, so you knew Ember your whole life?" Lunaris asked.
"Yep," she chuckled. "I remember this little flame floating around me when I was a baby, and later on, it morphed into a little boy. He was my closest friend. He even self-proclaimed himself as my older brother."
The triplets sat with Fye in a circle listening to her story. They wanted to know more about Ember's reincarnation. And it was a great surprise to learn she had known him before.
"What did you do after telling your parents?" Lunaris questioned.
"I continued my life as before," Fye started. "In my world, everyone is born with a core. Some lucky kids have an elemental core. All babies born with this core are taken from their parents and put in housing facilities where higher authorities assure 'proper growth and development' is what they say. Ember told me he didn't want me to be one of them, so he masked my core and waited. I'm glad he did."
