BY THE TIME CLASS ENDS, I find myself being pulled to the side alongside Ezekiel, and he doesn't seem too thrilled about it. Mr. Woods motions for us to come over with a smile. I can't help but feel tense when I realise how close we are standing, but I decide to let it go and direct my attention towards our teacher. He didn't deserve an inch of my attention.

"Clementine, I must say, your academic achievements this semester have been remarkable. In fact, I consider you to be the best student in my class." Mr. Woods praised.

I kept my mouth shut with a plastered smile as he rambled on about irrelevant things. My ears only perk up when he mentions both Ezekiel and my name, followed by the word 'tutor'.

My heart almost jumped out of my chest. "Excuse me?" I asked, hiding my disdain behind a sweet smile.

His expression turned earnest as he continued, "Given your exceptional performance, I believe you are the perfect candidate to help Ezekiel with his history studies. I would like you to tutor him."

My heart sank, the sinking feeling deepening into a wave of frustration. Tutoring Ezekiel? The boy who takes pleasure in tormenting me with his cutting remarks and snide comments? I couldn't fathom a more tortuous task.

Before I could respond, Ezekiel interjected, his voice dripping with disdain. "You've got to be fucking kidding me." He grumbled with a scowl. "Why would I want her help? I can handle my own studies just fine."

His words stung, fueling the fire of resentment between us. I held back my rising anger, determined to maintain composure. A heavy silence settled in the room, punctuated by the tension hanging thick in the air. I braced myself for the challenge, knowing that this tutoring arrangement would test both my patience and my ability to endure a brain crushing torture session.

I try to rectify the situation. "Surely there's someone else who can tutor him?" Someone who isn't me.

Mr. Woods shakes his head.

"With upcoming tests and mid exams, the other tutors aren't available at this time."

I absentmindedly chewed on the flesh of my inner cheek, refusing to gag when I tasted the familiar metallic taste.

I hate that he's right. Everyone's busy during this time of season; whether it be with grades or school events.

"So?" Mr. Woods's gaze shifted back and forth between Ezekiel and me, his brown eyes filled with anticipation. "What's it gonna be?"

The weight of the decision hung heavy in the air, and I could feel the intensity of the moment. It seemed as if the entire room held its breath, awaiting our response. Ezekiel's piercing stare met mine, both of us aware of the animosity that lay between us.
