EVANGELINA'S POV

THE LAKE

Martín and I sat side by side, seeing the water glisten from the sun. The vibe between us at that moment was nice.

"How's the family?"

"Rowdy as usual. Adriano has towered over me a bit." I dragged a finger down my face as a tear.

"My parents caught the news of your return from your mom. Correction, my mom caught the news of your return from your mom. My dad still... you know."

"New topic, who's pissing you off?"

My brows furrowed. "What???"

"When you're angry, you only eat apples because the hard bites help relax you. So I am asking, who is pissing you off this bad?"

I looked down at my unbitten apple.

"Can't a woman eating apples at random? A lot has changed since you've been away."

"No kidding. Before seeing you, I saw Bruno and he... ignored me?"

I snapped my head to him. "Sour apples! He saw you?!"

"Sour apples? You're still saying that?" He laughed.

I smacked his arm, my face flushed with humiliation. Martín knew I couldn't swear properly. Not because I was incapable, but because the children who would repeat what they heard would result in a stern discipline from the Madrigal mothers of the house.

Martín glanced at me, then stared. "What?" I asked.

"You okay? You look like you've been crying."

"You ever went through a night of having the same nightmare over and over?" I yawned.

That was partly the truth. Losing track of how many times I've awoken was starting to catch up with me.

"Do you want to go home and rest?-" My head thumped on Martin's shoulder.

CASITA

My eyes fluttered open, the room was dim, but I wasn't concerned as I recognized my surroundings.

Julieta came into my room carrying my apple, a tiny dish of food, and a glass of water.

"How are you feeling?"

"Well rested."

She handed me my apple and plate of food. I wasn't really hungry anymore though.

"Someone is here to see you."

Without warning, Mari stormed into my room, dashed up the floating stairs and gave me the strongest embrace of her life, behaving as though I had nearly died but escaped death's clutches.

"LINA! ARE YOU OKAY?!" I winced as she shouted directly into my ear.

"Aaah! Mari." Shielding my ear with my hand.

Julieta shut my room door behind her.

"You nearly made my heart burst out. I should not be having near heart attacks at my age." Mari pinched my cheeks like I was a kid even though I was the older one. "I'm sorry Mamá."

"You're okay, that's all that matters."

I looked away, unable to look my friend in the eye.

"Soo, how are things with Bruno? I heard about the incident with Francesca."
