Wednesday was writing the novel that was robbing her of entire days of study, which she could have spent more interestingly, like torturing her annoying, irritating, rowdy roommate, Enid.
Unfortunately, Enid had saved her life during the fight with the Hyde, so she felt indebted to her, she couldn't hurt her.
She didn't want to admit that even without that obstacle she would never have hurt that annoyingly blonde girl, on the contrary, she would have killed anyone who had even made her less disgustingly happy than usual.
Wednesday's fingers stopped again on the keys as she once again heard a heavy sigh coming from behind her, where Enid lay, on her hideously colored bed in the forbidding corner of their huge room.
- What is it?- Wednesday asked her, annoyed by those continuous interruptions, without even turning to look at her.
-You know, it's the first day of our return to the Nevermore Academy, we should be out celebrating with the others, doing damage, having fun! But you're already holed up in your room, writing. We didn't even attend the inauguration for the new Headmaster!- The blonde answered, turning over on the bed, like a caged animal.
-Enid, you could have gone at the inauguration very easly, I didn't force you to stand behind me like a little dog. - Wednesday replied curtly, starting to hit the keys again with her little fingers.
-I know, it's just that... - "I missed you" she wanted to say to her "I want to be next to you as much as possible, I need your dark light" she wanted to confess to her.
That was the reason why Enid had broken up with Ajax that summer, because she hadn't missed him, or at least not as much as she had missed Wednesday.
Not to mention her problem with transformations, after the fight with the Hyde she was no longer able to "wolf out" again, despite her parents' continuous training on full moon days. She felt useless again, she was almost ashamed to be with the others with the anxiety of having eyes fixed on her as if they had discovered her secret.
Only Wednesday knew about it and only she should have known. She had already offered to help her, in some way. They would have worked on a solution.
-Just that...?- Wednesday interrupted her thoughts.
-Shouldn't we talk about your new stalker? Or the fact that Xavier has been calling and texting you for at least an hour? - Enid suddenly stood up and moved to Wednesday's part of the room, taking the phone that she kept on her bed, which had been constantly vibrating for an hour for Xavier's calls.
-If they aren't messages from the stalker, they don't interest me.- Wednesday rolled her eyes at the mention of Xavier's name. She thought of him as a good friend, even a useful one, but she had received too many messages from him that summer, via the new contraption that he had given her.
-Well, there is a message from the stalker!- Enid exclaimed too exalted and only at that point Wednesday did turn to look at her friend. All those bright colors blinded her, it always took her a few seconds to calm down and not think of tearing her eyes out, even though strangely, since they had met again she hadn't yet perceived the annoyance, seeing and hearing her.
She could never admit that she had missed her that summer, no.
She had just missed the heady feeling of the possibility that if she wanted she could have strangle her in her sleep, since they slept in the same room. Just that.
She would have not opened her feelings to anyone else again, her lack of trust in human beings had collapsed after the events of the early end of the previous school year. But maybe, deep down, she only had some trust left for the girl who saved her life.
-Show me the message. - Wednesday command to Enid, standing up and raising an arm, her hand open waiting for her still new cell phone.
-Only if you'll answer Xavier first and we'll go down to the others. - Enid answered, not sure why she wanted to push Wednesday into Xavier's arms. Maybe, just because she knew that Xavier, with his skills, could have protected Wednesday more than she could have, now that she was back to being an useless and insecure feline, as her mother had told her.
- Never gonna happen.- Wednesday reached out her hand but Enid moved her phone behind her back, forcing the other to come dangerously close to her, risking a physical contact that would have horrified Wednesday.
-Enid, I will count to three before stabbing you. -
-Go ahead, but then you'll still have to leave the room to hide my body.- She said it with such calmness and a smile on her lips that made Wednesday shiver with excitement. For a moment, she recognized that scene as one of the classic couple dynamics she saw over and over in her parents' relationship. That pleased her quite a bit.
Enid sometimes knew how to take her. That was what she had missed about Enid.
-One. - Wednesday started counting, moving her arm behind Enid's back to touch the phone that she was holding close to her, while she hid her other hand behind her back, as if she really wanted to take a dagger that she was holding behind her to stab Enid, but Enid didn't moved a finger, limited herself to being impassive, smiling at her and looking into her eyes, despite the fact that inside she was dying of fear.
-Two...- Wednesday lost her courage when for a moment she lost herself in the clear eyes of the irritating blonde, who was wasting her precious time.
Enid would gladly have mixed the blue of her eyes with Wednesday's black, and their faces were close enough to afford them to do so.
Time stopped, Wednesday only perceived her friend's breathing and accelerated heartbeat, like a prey now trapped.
She didn't know if her heart was pounding too and she tried to ignore it.
They didn't know how long they remained in that position, but after endless precious minutes, Enid had the courage to speak.
-Wednesday, you forgot the three...- She whispered, remaining motionless and without taking her eyes off the other girl, who seemed to wake up from her horrible happy thoughts.
They didn't have time to say anything else because someone knocked on their door and just gave them time to move away to their respective parts of the room before bursting in without permission.
It was Xavier, who yelled their names.
-Girls, we've been looking for you all day, come on!-
He didn't notice that Enid could barely breathe and that her heart was pounding, like Wednesday's, even though she remained physically unmoved, while Enid herself looked shaken.
-Yep! I'm coming! - Enid exclaimed with a hop and without even turning to look at Wednesday, she left her phone on the bed and ran out of the room, suddenly back to being the rowdy and goofy little girl Wednesday knew.
Xavier looked at Wednesday, who was still standing, more dead than alive, as usual.
-What's app?-
