Once at school, they secured their bikes and everyone raced in. Chen pulled Rubio to the side, just as they were headed upstairs to the security checkpoint. "Dude, forget about the party. I cannot get in trouble!"
"Chen, relax!"
"No, look" he said, taking a look around, "I'm saving every penny I've got. My neighbor -Mister Young- his son is moving. I think he's joining the Army or something. Anyway," he said as they moved towards the line in the front of the school, by the checkpoint. "He told me he's willing to hold off on selling his son's car til I get enough money to buy it. So, I can't lose my job now. I'm gonna be doing more hours and doing some odd jobs to get it faster. I want that car, Rubio!" Chen said desperately.
"Oh, ok, ok" Rubio said nodding his head slowly.
"Besides, doctor said the only way my grandma is gonna get better is with surgery. We don't have enough, but...if I can get the car, I have better chances at a better job and then I will be able to pay for my grandma."
"What about your dad?"
"He's still working the visa to get here. Immigration stuff with China is a huge problem now. Besides, the military wont let them go! Transferring money is almost impossible since he has barely enough time to eat!"
"Is he ok?" Rubio asked as they went through security.
Once inside and with their backpacks, both boys began making their way down the hall towards the dinning area. The lines was still long, but at leas they still had a couple of minutes to get a bite.
"Yeah! He survived the last scare, but...it was a close one!" Chen responded, nodding slowly.
The line was surprisingly moving really fast, so much so that it only took them three minutes to cover about 15 feet of distance. Once with their trays, they turned to the seating area, when a hand in the air caught their attention.
"Hey guys!" Kelly called loudly.
Both boys made their way to the table, as Kelly and Leyla scooted over. Right after greetings, they began devouring their food. Rubio even took out the food from home!
"Anyone heard anything about Kaykay?" Leyla asked, while finishing her apple sauce.
"No" the boys answered with a mouthful, shaking their heads.
"No, lemme text Luca. He told me they were meeting the judge really early today." Kelly said, going for her cellphone.
"Oh my God! Poor Kaykay" Leyla lamented, shaking her head slowly.
"Yo!" Marv called, approaching the group.
"MARV!" responded the group in content.
"Hey y'all!" he greeted.
Everyone stood and greeted the incomer, right after he placed his tray down. The ladies shared with him a quick hug and the boys shook hands and shared a 'guy' hug. Everyone could breathed easily now!
"You're back!" Chen and Rubio said excitedly.
"We missed you!" Kelly added.
"Boy, where you've been?" Leyla demanded.
Since they all began asking questions at the same time, Marv had to put his hands out to stop them, "Woah! Woah! One at a time, y'all!"
"Ok, ok" Kelly called to order, putting a hand out to stop the others, "First of all, are you ok?"
Marv passed his hand over his messed up braids and responded, "I'm alive, so..."
"Marv!" Kelly scolded, as he took a big gulp of juice.
