A few weeks went by, and people have slowly trickled into the camp that we helped station a few miles outside Atlanta, at a quarry. So far, it's been uneventful, people arriving, story time around the fire, hunting, gathering. Surviving.
"Abby could you go get some berries? We're starting to run low," Lori asked as I stepped out of my tent after getting dressed. I sighed and grabbed the bucket for berries and started to head towards the quarry where the berry bushes were.
"Good morning, Abigale," a few people said as I walked by, people doing their morning chores, and I nod at them politely.
"Morning, Abby!" Sofia says looking up from her morning schoolwork.
"Good morning, Sofia." I nod in greeting to Carol, glancing at the tent where I'm sure Ed is still sleeping and Carol smiles at me as I walk by.
"Hey, sugar tits, where are you off to?" Merle said as I passed him and his brother, Daryl.
"Merle, I swear you say shit just to get a rise outta me, quit it, but good morning to you too boys," I said as I walked away. Merle irritated me but he was harmless... mostly. Daryl has always been quiet, unlike Merle who always had something to say, but I still always said 'Good morning' to them both.
"You bet your sweet ass I do," Merle replies, before I got out of eat shot. I didn't turn around, only flipping him off as I continued to walk towards the quarry. I sighed as I started collecting them. They were running out fast, there won't be enough for everyone soon.
"Abby, wanna go on a run with me? I need people to for this run, and I trust you," Glenn said as I passed the last few trees of the clearing where the RV, and a few fire pits were simmering.
"Sorry Glenn, I promised Lori, I would help her and Carol with the kid's schoolwork, next time I promise," I said pointing at Carl and Sophia sitting at a little table reading for now.
"I'll go with you China man, Darlena is going hunting and I ain't going with this time, and it gets boring around here." Merle says coming out of the trees. Glenn rolls his eyes and reluctantly agrees.
"Merle, we've been over this, one, he's Korean, two, that's racist. You can't say shit like that," I scold seriously. Merle glares at me.
"I ain't a child, sugar, so you best not treat me like one," Merle threatens, trying to be intimidating.
"Oh hush, Dixon, you're fine, don't go starting shit," I replied standing my ground. "Daryl leave already?"
"Nah, waiting for you like always, sugar."
I roll my eyes, someone like Daryl wouldn't wait for someone like me to say goodbye. I turn to Glenn, "Don't you leave yet, I'll see you guys off, yeah?" I told him and started walking back into the trees, with a small handful of berries. "Heard from your brother that you're heading off, I brought ya some berries, I know it ain't much but it's something," I said as I walked up to Daryl's tent he had set up.
"I ain't takin' your food," He said glancing up from sharpening his knife.
"Yes, you are, you're one of two hunters our camp has. It's more important you eat than anyone." I argue lightly and hold out the berries. He shook his head.
"Nah, give it to the kids."
"They already got some. Take it or I'll hide it in your bag, and it'll just get wasted." Daryl scoffed.
"I'd like to see ya try." He said challenging me, not looking away from me.
"I had a cop for a brother, and I managed to hide a fish in the stations record room. They still don't know how it got there. So, don't doubt that I can hide shit without someone noticing," I smirk, and hold out my hand again. He clenches his jaw and finally grabs the berries and sets them aside to put away later. "Anyways, be careful out there, don't get bit or anything, yeah?"
