The day was a day like any other, my step-dad and my mom were in the kitchen making breakfast and worry was stained on their faces and I look at them and asks, "What's wrong?"

My mom goes to me and kneels in front of me, "Don't concern yourself with it, Carter. Just go to school."

She handed me my lunch and I started heading to school on my bike. I'm in high school by the way, I'm 16 and I believe I'm a Junior is what it's called in America.

Im not fully American born, you see my mom and I are from England. Corkshire to be exact, it has English and Irish co-ownership of the town.

My step-dad and...my...forget it, I can't talk about that, or think about it now. Point is he's American and he's not the best dad. I want my dad back, but he's now in Utah and we live stupid Highland. Where is Highland your wondering? It's a New Hampshire town, not many know it exists.

Highland feels like a town trapped in time, but when you leave it you know it's not. As I bike to school I meet with my friend Derrick. He and I have been friends since we were little, we helped each other at every monumental moment of our lives from getting our first kisses and first girlfriends to deaths and tragedies.

"What's up, Carter?" I get asked by Derrick and honestly I don't know how to respond. I could say the classic Not Much response but I think he'll just see through that bullshit. Well maybe not I need to respond but with what? Think Carter, Think!

"Not Much, Man. How about you?" I hope get doesn't see through it. "Come on, Carter. I know you and there's always something up." Fuck! He saw throughly it! Great, just what I need right now, a best friend that knows me too well. "You're right, My parents were discussing something , I think, and it left worry on their faces, I questioned by mom on it and she just told me not to worry. Now I'm worried even more."

"Same thing with my dad. He has my sister and I concerned." Derrick said to me and I pondered 'What is going on?' in my mind.
"We better get to school. We don't wanna be late." We get on our bikes and ride to school, neither of us have our licenses and rules are somewhat strict here in Highland. I seems like you can never leave but some people do, but not for long. The longest I've seen people gone is 3 days and never more.

I guess no one takes vacations from this place, Highland is an interesting town. Based in a religion from the start, Most of the town is Christian, and there's one church that every one attends for every Sunday. There's always a church event like every week and weekend. From Youth Groups to Bible Studies and Missions trips, those are actually the one time I've seen people gone like 1 week but usually just that 1 week and then they return. 'Where do they go?' 'What do they do?' I always wonder.

But I'll probably never know, but hey, part of me is okay with that. As for my stance one that whole thing, I do believe in God and Jesus but I  don't know, I wouldn't consider myself a follower or believer. I'm kinda an outcast that way. I don't subscribe to the same thing as the whole town, maybe I will someday, but not today. Remember when I say everyone goes to church on Sunday. Well, it does include me. I tried to convince my mom and step-dad that I don't wanna go, but every has to go basically. i just talk to Derrick while I'm there.

Derrick does believe, I think, like is a believer. We talk about it some of the time. His dad is a pastor at the church, I don't know his role but I know he isn't the senior/lead pastor.

We get to school and lock up our bikes and then walk into the school. Our high school, Highland High, is about medium sized I'd say.
It's about like 800 kids across all grades.
I have first period with Derrick so we sit together and mostly goof off which makes the teacher mad. That only makes us wanna do it more and if the teach acted like they didn't care I would turn it up a few notches. Our teachers name is Mr. Evansworth, and because I can do a British accent, not as naturally as I use to but still can, I say Evansworth as irritating I can in a fancy tone.

Derrick only takes it as far as he can without getting too much in trouble, but I don't care to I don't like this place, so if they suspend me there doing me a favor.

"Carter and Derrick! That is enough! I'll give you detention for the next 2 weeks if you continue." He says that trying to sound intimidating but I wasn't fazed. Thou Derrick backed me off and I did cause I don't want him in trouble.

This is English class and I do like this class, I love to read actually. Just not when I'm told to read. Free reading I book I care about is fun for me. Also it's very relaxing, but school has to ruin the fun of it.

Class goes by fast as we read a couple chapters of a story and before I know it the bell rings and Derrick is off to his next class and I am off to mine. Which is Math. Ugh!  Why does math exist? Whoever created Math should be in jail, Derrick loves it and I don't understand how. It is the worst subject on plant earth and if you also love it well you can go to jail too.

I enter the classroom and wait for my nightmare to be over and done with.
