Hello there, I suppose you're wondering who I am. I bet you are, curiosity is a funny thing, isn't it? My name is Ethan Turner, but you knew that already, didn't you? Highland is my home, and I know a lot about everything going on inside it. I even know that I'm a character in this story, weird right? Knowing that this is a created world and the people inside are like ants with how much they know. I'm not God cause I'm not all knowing and knowing that much is both terrifying and fascinating at the same time but no I just know everyone in the town.
Though, not everyone knows me. I know about The Council, and before you ask no I'm not a member, but maybe you could consider me an ally? Possibly? I don't know. Or do I? I know about Carter and Derrick also their families, I know about Faith, I know about Valery and Glenn, About The Green Twins and everything there. Why do I? Simple, It's my job to know, I write the newspaper. The Highland Tangle! I bet a lot of you are now going, 'Ahh, gotcha. Now, I get it.' If you didn't either you're kinda slow or you haven't read this story yet.
Anyway, yea. I'm the main guy at the newspaper. I have a bit of a staff but not much since it's a small town. I hope I can help with some answer but also this is a story about it unfolding as you read so I'm not just gonna spoil everything. Just like Carter, Derrick and Faith, I'm also a main character as you would say. I wanna converse with all but I'm about to talk about some spoilers, if this is the first chapter your reading, STOP now!
Well actually I should have said that maybe 200 words ago, still read the beginning to now then come back if this the first chapter your reading. Now if your gone welcome back to this part but if you didn't, I warned you. So how about Faith's Dad being abusive to her, and Jim Kirby sweeping the problems under the rug to put on a happy face and pretend everything is fine! Some of these characters, I think you've learned by now, that I like to break the 4th wall. Hey! If Faith can by translating English for the reader so can I!
Maybe you'd like to know more about me, but that's not important. Or is it? Nah, probably not. I'll try to help you understand some of the stuff from now on, I think it's been pretty cut and dry. Well except The Council and How Derrick's Mom died and What the problems are with Highland and also The Family, Oops! Dang it! You weren't supposed to learn about them yet! Or were you? Alright I'll stop now, I'm even getting on my own nerves. Welp, now you know there's a The Family. Fantastic, Huh?
Yeaa, You'll learn more about them soon. These lips are sealed. You got that, S.E.A.L.E.D! SEALED!! Sigh, well I guess now is the part where you see my day. So let's get to that shall we? Now while all this pervious stuff in Highland and Utah was happening, I was working as usual. I'm not really a scrooge or anything where I'm obsessed with money and work. I just love writing for the newspaper, it brings me calm in this town of chaos. Something always happens here and I'm the one who addresses what's going on, I try to help the people who live here.
Help them by saying what's going on without saying what's going on. It's a trick I learned being with the FBI, that's r right I was one of them. Anyways let me tell all of you now if you don't already know, there's a reason why nobody can leave Highland especially Carter, Derrick, and Faith. Why? That's what you'll have to find out as you go. These lips are sealed, and no, not in the way you think for everyone who understands that reference. I want you to figure it out or learn in due time.
Our my assistants brings be over some steamed coffee, and I drink it. It goes down smooth and I smile as I continue to work. If you couldn't tell I'm not afraid of The Council like most are, what are they gonna do? Kill me? I'm not afraid of death. Torture me? I can't feel pain. Honestly, I dropped a rock on my foot when I was younger, it's a rare medical condition called Congenital insensitivity to pain and anhidrosis or CIPA is a rare disease that causes a person to not be able to feel pain or sweat.
I have to make sure that my food and beverages are at safe temperatures so that I don't burn myself and do harm to myself unknowingly. I get some work done around the office then walk outside and around town. The best way to learn about people is to walk this town. Just observe and see, looking around at what everyone is doing. I learn the most about people in their candid moments then when they pose in a way for conversation. If I can also leave you dear reader with some insight or some wise words.
They're this, the author Christine Mason Miller once said, "At any given moment, you have the power to say: this is not how the story is going to end." We chose our own story, but also we chose what stories we listen to and read about. Choice is a powerful thing. Yes, there are things like genes, upbringing, popular culture, technology, and unexpected events that are out of our choice or control but there is also very much that we can control and chose. I ponder the choices I've made and who I've become, I've made choices I'm not proud that have formed who I am.
