I took a deep breath as I looked out over Cider Lake. It was quiet and peaceful until I heard my best friend calling my name as he ran over,"Y/N, I've been looking for you everywhere." He came to a halt next to me, putting his hands on his knees and taking deep breaths while trying to talk,"I found something while I was walking looking for valberries." He took one final inhale before he stood upright,"I was walking around Stormbearer mountains, and I saw a stone door surrounded by abyss mage and hilichurls and I really wanted to defeat them and explore what's inside the door. But I knew if I did that, you'd scold me for being careless and irresponsible, so I thought to come get you so we could explore it together." I smiled before I stood up from the grass,"Of course I'll come with you. We are a team, after all. And I wouldn't have scolded you. I like to think of it as having a talk about how much I care for your safety." He rolled his eyes and smiled,"Whatever makes you feel better, I guess. Anyway, come on, I can't wait." He grabbed my hand and started running towards the bridge, barely giving me time to think before I had to start moving my legs so as not to fall.
We had gotten to Stormbearer mountains, and Bennett was telling more about what he had seen,"I think it was a cyro abyss mage and two pyro ones. Should be easy enough to beat them." I replied,"Every fight is easy if you plan for it." He turned to me with squinted eyes,"I feel like that was targeted, but you are right." He turned forward again but kept talking, not paying attention to the ground in front of him,"But then again, isn't thinking quick on your feet a fun aspect of fighting. Like just the thrill of having to think fast -"Bennett's negligence to his surroundings caused him to trip over a fair, medium-sized rock in the middle of the path. My hand instinctively shot up to cover my mouth as I tried to wait for his reaction to see whether I should laugh or help him up. He stood up and dusted off his clothes,"I don't think that was my bad luck's fault that time." He smiled. I noticed he'd scraped his knee on some other small rocks when he fell. I pointed it out,"Looks like you aren't completely unscathed. Come on, let's go sit down for a second so I can clean and bandage it." He tried to play it off like it was fine, but I insisted, saying I didn't want the risk of more dirt getting in it than there already was. Eventually, he agreed and sat on the grass close to the path.
I pulled a small first aid kit from my bag, I'd started carrying one after my first two adventures with Bennett. I grabbed an alcohol wipe and opened the small package. I saw Bennett's face scrunch up as I put the wipe over his cut. I tried to be gentle to lessen the pain, but his discomfort was still present. I quickly finished cleaning the small injury and picked up a bandaid before I stopped and thought to myself,'Should I put antibiotic ointment on it? It's not that big, so I doubt anything could get in it once I put the bandaid on.' I shook my head and put the bandaid on,'I need to stop acting like Bennett's weak.' I said to myself. "Okay, let's go." I said, picking up the trash I'd set beside me. I put in it an extra pocket on my bag. I'll throw it away when we get back to the city. He jumped up energetically and kept walking, giving me a quick 'thank you'.
I eventually saw something in the distance. The colors looked like it could be the abyss mages,"Is that what you were talking about? There's three mages, but I don't see a door." I asked, pointing to the three brightly colored enemies. He nodded,"Yes, that's it! Come on, let's go!" He said, trying to get me to run into the fight with him. I grabbed his arm as he went to run,"No, let's strategize at least a little bit before we go rampaging in." He gave an over dramatic sigh,"Fine." I rolled my eyes,"I think maybe you should focus on the cyro one first, and I'll attack the pryo ones, then after you defeat the cyro one you come and help me finish off the other two." I said, thinking about the multiple outcomes and possibilities. I started mumbling to myself,"But what if when we're fighting the two pyro ones, we break both their shields, and while we're focused on one, the other has time to regenerate their shield. Then, should we each focus on one? But Bennett's wouldn't be able to break one of their shields since he has a pyro vision." Another sigh from Bennett broke my concentration,"Sorry I was rambling. Let's just go with the original plan." I said apologetically as we kept waking approaching them.
We were getting close to them. I was surprised they hadn't noticed us yet. I summoned my weapon, getting ready to attack. I glanced over at Bennett, and he had his sword in hand. He gave me a nod, signaling he was ready. "Okay, 3, 2, 1, Go!" We jumped from behind the shrubs and sprinted at them. I dodged an attack from the cyro mage as I ran by. I heard the sound of Bennett's sword hitting against its shield from behind me. I hit my spear against one of the pyro mages' shields. I used my elemental skill to emit hydro and enfuse it into my weapon. I focused on one mage, swinging a jabbing my polearm at it. Its shield became more and more weak the more strikes I made against it. I made sure to dodge most of the attacks coming from the second mage, but I still got a mild burn on my arm. The mage I was focused on suddenly poofed, and my eyes darted around frantically. In this frantic search, I saw Bennett get hit back. I panicked and broke my focus, taking a pretty powerful hit from the mage that had appeared behind me. I groaned and swung my weapon with all my force. I heard the shield shatter. I charged my attacks doing more damage. I used my elemental skill, the initial damage finished off the mage, and I then turned focus to the second pyro mage. I saw the cyro mage's shield shatter out the corner of my eye as I jabbed my polearm at the second mage. I charged an attack, and then I just kept hitting the mage's shield. I heard Bennett's footsteps getting closer to me, his sword, and my spear hit against the shield at the same time, and it shattered. He immediately used his burst of elemental energy, and I used mine after defeating the mage almost instantly. I put my weapon away,"Well that was easy." I said as I smiled at him,"I told you it would be. We are an amazing duo together after all." I saw the burn on my arm,"Well maybe we're not completely fine." I said, showing him my slight burn and pointing out a couple of scrapes and cuts on him. I pulled my first aid kit back out,"Fine, I'm not gonna argue." He said in defeat. I smiled again,"Looks like you're learning." I suddenly remembered the main reason we went through all this,"So...where's that door." His head shot up, looking around frantically,"It was right here! I swear! Where could it have-?" I put a hand on his shoulder,"It's okay Bennett, let's just take care of our injuries, and then we can look some more." He looked down,"It's just my luck that this would happen."
I managed to get him to follow me and sit in a somewhat clear plain, I started cleaning and bandaging some of his wounds while I tried to reassure him,"Bennett it's not your fault, it was abyss mages maybe they could've made a disappearing portal? Like the one the traveler described when they told us about how they'd seen their twin." He remained silent, only giving a slight shrug. "Bennett, if you really think about it, your luck wasn't even bad. Our injuries could've been a lot worse." He shrugged again,"I guess. But it's still frustrating." I nodded,"I know it is, but isn't that kind of a part of adventuring?" He looked at me confused,"What do you mean?" I put the last bandaid on his arm,"I mean, isn't disappointment part of being an adventurer? For example, you can't expect to find buried treasure every time you go to the beach, can you?" He crossed his arms,"I guess that's a way of putting it. But I know what I saw." He tone was hard to say it was a mix of frustration and sadness."I'm not saying I don't believe you. Maybe the door will be there another day, and we'll be able to explore it then." He shrugged again. "You wanna go back to the city? I'll buy you something from Good Hunter to make you feel better." He gave me a small smile,"Sure let's go." We stood up and started walking on the path again.
