Beomgyu anxiously awaited Eunchae's message, knowing it was her last midterm exam. As time ticked by, he grew increasingly tense, his heart sinking with every passing moment. The sky outside was already cloaked in darkness. Unable to bear the worry any longer, Beomgyu dialed Eunchae's number, but there was no response. His concern deepened.
In a desperate attempt to find answers, Beomgyu decided to call Eunchae's mother. With trembling hands, he dialed the number and, to his relief, she answered promptly. "Ma'am, I've been trying to reach Eunchae for updates on her exam, but she isn't responding. Is she home?"
"I'm still at the office, Beomgyu. I don't know," Eunchae's mother replied, her voice tinged with worry.
"But... she never takes this long to text me," Beomgyu voiced his concern.
"I'll try contacting the neighbors. I'll call you back," Eunchae's mother assured him, her own anxiety evident.
Five agonizing minutes passed before Eunchae's mother returned the call, her voice laced with panic. "Beomgyu, she hasn't returned home! She never comes late from school. What should I do?"
"Did she mention anything about going somewhere with a friend?" Beomgyu asked, his mind racing.
"No, she didn't," Eunchae's mother replied, her worry escalating.
"It's getting late. I'll contact the police. Don't worry, ma'am. I'll find her," Beomgyu reassured her, determination in his voice.
"I'm on my way home then," Eunchae's mother responded, her voice filled with a mix of fear and hope.
"Okay," Beomgyu acknowledged, his mind already racing with worry.
Beomgyu quickly reached out to a friend from his department, whose father was a police officer, requesting immediate assistance in tracking Eunchae's phone. Once the police had pinpointed the location, Beomgyu joined them in a police van, his heart pounding in his chest. The officer muttered under his breath, "It's indicating a dangerous area nearby, an alley. Damn it! What is she doing there?"
Beads of sweat formed on Beomgyu's forehead as they arrived at the location. They wasted no time and began searching. Beomgyu called out Eunchae's name with increasing desperation, venturing deeper into the alley. Suddenly, he heard a faint whimper. "Eunchae! Are you here?" he called out.
To his immense relief, Beomgyu heard the word "Oppa!" whispered in response. He followed the sound, his heart racing, until he discovered Eunchae huddled in a dirty place. Without a second thought, Beomgyu rushed towards her, his voice filled with anguish, "Who did this to you?"
He enveloped her in a tight embrace, cradling her fragile form in his arms as if she were a precious baby. Eunchae could only point in the direction the culprits had fled, unable to find the strength to speak further. The police swiftly pursued the given lead, apprehending a group consisting of one girl and three boys. Eunchae had once considered the girl her closest friend, but little did she know that her so-called friend had betrayed her, selling her out to a gang intent on ruining her life. They had subjected her to a harrowing ordeal, leaving her weak and battered until the sound of the approaching police had sent them fleeing.
With tears streaming down her face, Beomgyu gently wiped away the blood from Eunchae's battered face with his bare hands. He rushed her to the hospital and immediately contacted Eunchae's mother. Overwhelmed with relief and anguish, Eunchae's mother burst into tears as she laid eyes on her daughter's condition. A few moments later, her father arrived, embracing Beomgyu tightly as he whispered with a voice filled with shattered emotions, "Thank you for saving my daughter's life."
Days passed, and as Eunchae regained consciousness, her parents met with her, while Beomgyu patiently waited by her side. Emerging from the cabin, Eunchae's parents encouraged Beomgyu to speak with her. Rising from his seat, he asked, "How is she doing?"
