The strawberry fields were beautiful this time of day. The sunset made a wonderful, calm sight . Naturally, everyone decided to cluster there. Percy and Annabeth were wrapped up in each other, prompting several yells and a tin can thrown at them.
Nico turned to Will. "Stupid romantics. I'm so happy we're never gonna be like that." They laughed as they gazed at the sky. Just then, Nico's stomach grumbled. "Did you even eat dinner?" Will asked accusingly. "Relax, Solace. I ate, like, half a pack of trail mix." He responded sarcastically.
"Well, whatever it was, it clearly wasn't enough." Will said, pulling an apple out of his pocket. Nico raised his eyebrows. "I have so many questions. How long was that in your pocket? Also, aren't those supposed to make you go away?" He asked, reaching for it. Will pulled it out of reach, saying, "If you want this, you need to promise me you'll start actually eating." Nico rolled his eyes.
"Yes, Doctor." He said as Will lightly tossed the apple to him. He caught it and took a bite. Piper, who had been casually watching the ordeal, gasped. Both boys turned to her. "What?" Nico questioned, mouth still full of apple. "Nico, you accepted the apple. Do you know what that means?" He shook his head, confused.
The daughter of Aphrodite groaned and face palmed. "You people don't know anything about traditions." By now, the whole group had turned around to see what was going on. Annabeth started speaking. "So, in the old myths and stories, if a man wanted to propose to a woman, he tossed her an apple. If she accepted his proposal, she caught it." Nico looked at Will. "And it seems like you accepted the apple." Will's jaw dropped. They both turned as red as the half eaten apple, which had been dropped.
There was a silence until Percy whooped. "Gods, I thought me and Annabeth would be the first ones to get engaged. Looks like you guys beat us to the punch." He cast a mischievous look at the group as an idea popped into his head. "You know, I think this calls for-" Nico cut him off. "No. No, Jackson, don't you dare." It was a lost cause, as he and Will were being lifted. They were carried and promptly dumped in the lake.
Will was laughing as he helped Nico out of the water. Will had almost instantly dried, being a sun kid, but Nico looked like a wet, dark poodle. "I swear to the gods, Percy, I will send you to my father the old fashioned way!" He yelled, not really meaning it. Will laughed and put his arms around Nico. "C'mon, he's gotta come to our wedding." He leaned up and kissed his sunny boyfriend. "Don't you dare say a thing, Perseus, I've seen you and Annabeth," he snapped as Percy opened his mouth, presumably to make a teasing remark.
Nico thought of himself 4 years ago. How lonely, sad, and self denying he had been. He looked at this group of people he called friends, so much warmth and love pouring from them. He was happy he decided to stick around. For moments like these. For moments to come.
10 years later
"And you take this man to be your husband?" Nico barely heard the officiant as he quickly uttered "I do," and kissed the man in front of him without hesitation. Cheers erupted from the crowd, loudest of which coming from Percy, Jason, and Leo in the first row. He laughed and looked at his husband's shining face. Apollo must have blessed him, or his glowstick properties were at work. Whatever it was, he shined with joy.
He grabbed his hand and walked down the aisle, almost crying as emotion overwhelmed him. At a rare quiet moment during the reception, Percy and Annabeth walked up to him. She was quite large, as their first child, a little girl, was bound to pop out at any moment. Percy clapped on his shoulder, saying,"Man, I can't believe this. I remember when we first met. You were so small, and you didn't know celestial bronze from Stygian Iron. So much has changed. But I'm so happy you found your way and lived long enough to see the results. You know so many of us don't. I hope you have a great, long life with him." Nico was touched. As he was about to thank the man, Percy whispered, "And I'm glad you found your type."
As she pulled him away, presumably to stop him from being harmed by the son of Hades, Annabeth uttered a congratulations. He imagined what Jason would say if he were here. He would have been proud. He would have known deeply what this meant. Someone tapped his shoulder. Piper was pointing at the dance floor. "Nico, I think someone's ready for you. Go socialize for once." She pecked his cheek and lightly pushed him towards Will.
As he began dancing, he thought of all those who had been lost. All those yet to be lost. He thought of his old self, so deep in self hatred and fear he thought he could never be happy or have happy moments like these. He was grateful that he was able to live and thrive as a gay man. Most of all, he thanked his father, who had been right about one thing; one of his children was able to be happy. As one last thought, he quickly thanked Aphrodite for enabling his union. Nico Di Angelo was finally complete.
