"What have you done, Sol Byung, hm?" Taehyung whispered, carefully turning the victim's ID in his fingers.

He was sitting at his desk with a cup of half-drank, already cold coffee, and the light from the monitor illuminated his hands, coloring his caramel skin with shades of blue, hurting his already tired eyes. The sound of the door opening crept into his ears, but he didn't even bother to look up. He guessed it was probably Hoseok, who had left the office a few minutes ago to make another cup of coffee.

"You have something?" Jung asked as he approached him and sat down on the edge of his desk.

Before Taehyung could look up at him, the smell of freshly brewed coffee crept into his nostrils. So he shifted his gaze to his friend and watched for a moment as his slender hands lifted the red mug in which Jung always drank hot drinks whenever they stayed in the office after hours. It was late, but neither of them cared that drinking caffeine at this late hour would deprive them of sleep. They knew very well that probably none of them would go to sleep tonight.

"Nothing," he sighed. "I only found one parking ticket. In addition, it's three years old. Since then, nothing."

"I just spoke to Yoongi," the older one began. "Looks like the victim had a dog. They found food and bowls in his apartment, but there is no trace of the animal. Perhaps Byung was abducted on a walk, and the dog is wandering somewhere. We'll check the nearby shelters and clinics, see if we can find something. They also didn't find the victim's car, so maybe the perpetrator took it. We have already sent the information to the traffic police. Other than that, they found nothing suspicious in the victim's house."

"Then why him?" Taehyung asked, even though he knew neither of them knew the answer to that question.

"Maybe there is no greater philosophy to it?" Jung thought as he ran his fingers through his dark hair. "Sometimes murderers choose their victims by chance. Maybe he didn't like his shoes or his hairstyle... Who knows what these freaks have in mind..."

"Lin raped and killed a young girl, but he was a rich man. We know very well that if he hadn't gotten him, Lin would have gone free. It wasn't a random crime. He wanted to punish him because he knew no one else would..." Kim continued. "Do you think he could pick someone random now?"

"So, what's the key?" the elder asked, not expecting an answer. "Byung wasn't married. He had no children. He worked as a plumber. Nobody ever complained about him. There's nothing in the database on him except for the ticket you found. They had no mutual friends, they moved in different circles. They have nothing in common," Hoseok concluded.

He put the mug to his lips, with a delicate column of smoke floating above it, and took a few sips, still clearly pondering what could link these two victims.

"Or maybe we're just not looking in the right places?" he asked after a moment. "If the victim was a plumber, maybe Byung worked for the Lins on one of the buildings? Maybe that's where they met and still kept in touch."
