Aemond climbed over rocks. He knew he had to be asleep in bed, but Vhagar's cries had not stopped since Queen Laena died.

As Aemond trekked and climbed his way to where the dragon's cries got louder and louder, he saw the grieving giant beast was finally getting some sleep when he placed his hand on her scaly body, her eyes opening, slightly frightening the boy when Vhagar snarled. He stared into the face of one of the mightiest dragons to live.

Her growls did not deter Aemond, who had an unbothered look.

Like father, like son.

Once Vhagar turned her head away, Aemond tried to touch her again when she turned back to face the boy who kept interrupting her slumber. Opening her large mouth, Vhagar had a breath of fire ready to scorch Aemond when he called out.

"Dohaeris!" Serve.

Holding out his hand to stop her, he called out. "Dohaeris, Vhagar! Lykiri!" Serve, Vhagar. Calm.

"Lykiri. Lykiri." Vhagar closed her mouth and settled, inhaling, then purred in Aemond's face.

Aemond knew what she was doing. Caraxes purred when Daemon was near and petting him. Sunfyre, Dreamfyre, Vermithor and Silverwing had done the same with Aegon, Helaena and the twins.

Vhagar is accepting him.

Moving closer, Aemond grabbed the reins that Laena had left on Vhagar before her death and climbed on the dragon's back, using the rope that kept Vhagar grounded.

Vhagar grumbled and stood up when Aemond yelled, "Soves!" Fly.

"Dohaeris, Vhagar! Soves!" Serve, Vhagar! Fly!

Vhagar stretched. Aemond gripped the reins tighter as Vhagar tried to wrangle herself out of her ropes.

In their chamber, Baela and Rhaena looked out the window to see a figure on top of Vhagar, watching as the dragon crawled on its winged feet and two legs, spreading its wings and taking off the ground, roaring as she took to the sky, with a new rider on her back.

Was this what his mother felt when she rode on Caraxes with Father for the first time? Did she feel terrified when the dragon raced to the skies? Did she scream and yell as he was yelling now?

His feet dangling in the sky, Aemond kept his grasp on the reins, knowing if he let go, he may die, and then his mother would surely mourn to no end. She might blame Ser Criston for not keeping an eye on him, the Septas for not making sure he was in bed, or Aegon for not being there when he made contact with Vhagar.

Vhagar flew higher and higher in the sky, roaring, unaware that her new rider was in trouble. Climbing back onto the reins using two of Vhagar's spikes, Aemond took control of Vhagar and yelled again as Vhagar took a nosedive for the ground, only to tilt herself so her shadow was below and Aemond on her back, her tail kicking up some grass and dirt.

The new dragon rider dodged his head to one side as Vhagar flew by some white birds and flew over the sea. Vhagar turned so her wings dipped in the water, the spray hitting her body and Aemond.

Lifting the reins, Vhagar flew up from the water, but once they were high enough, Vhagar dipped down, causing Aemond to yell again, but this time, not in fright.

"Yeah!" Aemond laughed. The fear had passed, and other feelings had begun t wash over him.

Joy. Pride. Excitement.

He could see why his siblings and father enjoyed it so much. Flying is fun! The wind in your hair, the sights below, the fastest travel. Aemond now felt like a true Targaryen.
