Devika never really understood why this class was always so quiet when she walked by. The only thing she could ever hear was Professor Binns talk about yet another very interesting topic, but she never heard a student ask questions or participate in the conversation. This time, it was the other way around.
Devika was sitting next to Amit, who for some reason forgot to flip the pages of his book for like 20 minutes now, and he was definitely not alone. The sun was shining through the mosaic windows, and multiple students were fast asleep on their desks. Some of them tried to support their heads with their hands, but only a handful of them were successful. Jude was also present in this class, and he was so close to losing his focus. Poppy, who was sitting next to him, lost a long time ago, and her face was now resting on the wodden desk.
Professor Binns was a ghost who was known for his very slow lectures. Many students usually fail this class because they sleep through most of it. Even if the theme was actually interesting, professor's Binns way of talking was pretty slow.
"Who can tell me about witch hunts that occurred during the 14th century? The professor asked, ready to answer his own question.
Nobody really paid attention, so it's not like they would raise their hands with the correct answer. Without hesitation, one student started speaking.
"A witch-hunt was a search of persons, respectively muggles, who were suspected of knowing magic and witchcraft. They were sentenced to death immediately, and these searches not only involved muggles but also actual wizards and witches, one of whom was Wendelin the Weird, who escaped multiple times by using the Flame-Freezing charm. Her tapestry also hangs in the Defense Against the Dark Arts tower."
Devika was proud of herself for knowing the answer; it was a pretty easy question. She learned about witch hunts years ago, and she knew the story of every portait and tapestry in the castle. Some of the students looked at her surprised, her Ravenclaw friends only smiled because they knew it would bring their house some points, and Amit, who was listening to her, was proud.
Jude looked over to her, and a big smile appeared on his face. He was always impressed when Devika talked like this, especially in class, it only made him proud.
"Ah, correct once again, Miss Toro. 10 points to Ravenclaw." Professor Binns spoke with a voice that didn't really seem impressed, more tired than happy, but Devika knew that she did a good job.
She took a deep breath and continued to listen to her professor, who continued with his lecture. Amit was staring at his Ravenclaw friend for a little bit until Devika noticed.
"Impressed?" she asked with her nose up.
"As always, you don't disappoint." Amit finally flipped through the pages of his book. "Other Ravenclaw students should try more."
Devika chuckled. "Does that include you too?"
"Ah, here we go. No, no, I'll stay with my telescope and Professor Shah. My appreciation for stars and planets is bigger than the history of magic, trust me."
Devika wasn't a person who would make fun of her friends in a mean way, she appreciated every piece of knowledge, even if it meant the stars, beasts, or potions. Some of the not-so-smart Ravenclaw students saw her as a challenge, and not only that, they teased her for only caring about high grades and house points, which was not entirely true. Due to her family and having siblings who couldn't use magic, she had to try hard to impress her father and her family. Her goal was to make them proud and, one day, maybe let them live a life of high class.
Everyone was relieved when Professor Binns finally announced the end of class, and not one but around five students stayed behind in the class, still sleeping on their desks. Devika picked up her heavy books from the table and happily walked out of the room.
"I still don't understand why everyone dislikes Professor Binns's class. I think his way of speaking is appropriate for people at their level." Devika chuckles, she was walking through the hallway right next to Jude, who was stretching.
"I wouldn't say his way of talking is appropriate, but I must say, I was impressed that you knew about that tapestry."
Devika raised her eyebrows, surprised by his comment. "Jude, I thought you knew me better!"
Jude waved his hands in front of his face and chuckled. "It's not like that, I just didn't know you would know the castle that well, I remember seeing the tapestry of the witch who used that charm before, but I didn't really pay it that much attention."
"That's why I'm in Ravenclaw and you're in Hufflepuff, my dear friend." Devika smiles at her friend.
"Yeah, yeah, you told me multiple times; you are proud of your colors, we know."
Jude was always a little surprised at how freely Devika spoke to him. She was always a little quiet and careful since she didn't really want to say something wrong that would put her in a bad light in front of others, especially Slytherins, since she saw a lot of competition in them for some reason. She wouldn't dare say it out loud, though, because it was easy for her to imagine their faces. Someone like Elise would definitely tell her otherwise and that Devika shouldn't feel pressured or cornered by anyone, but it was Ivy who would make a whole scene out of it.
Ivy was the type of person who wouldn't have a problem announcing to the whole Great Hall that Devika Toro, the smart Ravenclaw, was intimidated by Slytherins. She would tease her nonstop, every waking hour, and Ivy wouldn't love anything more than to make fun of her and call it "innocent fun."
That's why Devika always tried to put Ivy in her place whenever she got a chance, but deep inside, she did care about her in a really weird way that she couldn't explain. Ivy was hard to like, and spending time with her was like a ticking bomb that could blow up in your face anytime you made a wrong move.
Devika shook her head and stopped the wave of thoughts forming in her head. "Sorry about that," she said. "Now that we have some free time, what do you say about a trip to the library? There is a book that caught my eye last time I was there."
Jude thought about it for a second and scratched his head. "I did promise Poppy to check on that Fwooper she brought to our common room this morning, but I think I can squeeze a library visit into my schedule."
"A Fwooper?!" Devika raised her voice a little, surprised.
