The study was dark and quiet of Polly Plummer's mansion, just the way Nora liked it as she browsed the shelves looking for the latest books on myths and history. It was a subject she found endlessly fascinating. She was going down the aisle browsing the titles for one that might be useful for her next assignment when a title stopped her dead in her tracks.
Not a mythical book nor a history book, but a book of adventure, romance, and the always epic battle between good and evil. She pulled the tome from the shelf and rifled through the first few pages. Oh yes, she would be borrowing this one too. She added the book to the pile she had growing at the small desk on the end of the aisle when she heard it. A scuffle. Pausing, she listened for a moment, but the silence of the study enveloped her.
Her name is Nora Archer. But to everybody else, she's a total mystery.
But Nora remembers those years of her life with much more clarity than most other children. She remembered that she and her family used to live in the city of London. She remembered the lullaby that her mother had used to sing to her in the apartment building and the books that her mother had used to read to Nora about many legends and history, though Nora's favorite story was about the fearless woman called Alanna of Trebond and all sorts of myths.
She remembered all of those trips on the weekends. She had seen the mountains, the forests, and the lakes. In a way, those trips has been helpful for her sharpening her survival skills her father had taught her — how to navigate, how to camp, how to make a fire. She enjoyed stargazing with him and learning the hidden meanings behind those stars.
She remembered the games she used to play with her mom when she was done with school. She took her to the village to visit a few friends of his and let her pet the horses, who were curious about Nora and seemed to be eager whenever Nora petted one of them for some reason.
But all of that changed a few months ago. They knew themselves to be the most happy of families to live as they did and to love each other so. But sorrow can come to any city, no matter how happy. In other words, World War Two has broken out and it was coming to the city. She had to be evacuated away from the city with other kids and started temporarily staying at the outskirts of a small, local village with an elderly woman named Polly Plummer. She'd very kind to her and understanding about her worries regarding her parents. She helped Nora keep her mind of it with the chores, but she lets her exercise her independence sometimes and understand her new environment.
Nora sighed as she gotten off the memory lane and continued going down the aisle browsing the titles for one that might be useful for her next assignment. The girl's eyes lit up when she found a book that caught her interest. A thick, navy blue book with silver trims. On the cover were two rings, the outer one has intricate designs while the center ring depicted a lavish landscape of vibrant green mountains, colorful trees with purple and blue hues, and on the side of the image was a butterfly, it's wings adorned with luminescent patterns that made it pop. Around the circles were eight gemstones; a ruby, gold, silver, pearl, morganite, amethyst, emerald, and jade.
When Nora opened the book, she landed on the first page. The illustrations were unlike the ones Nora had seen on the pictures and tapestries. They weren't stylized or exaggerated in any way. These images looked as real and accurate, only with color that seemed to pop right out of the page like iridescent butterflies.
"Not long before the founding of Camelot, a wizard whose name has been long purged from history had went on a crusade against his fellow wizards and witches, claiming the humans are cruel and arrogant. His methods were harsh, brutal, and deadly and every way he went, he laid waste, killing those he despised the most, leaders who followed their kinds' ways whom he viewed as stagnant and demonstrative of their kind's arrogance and large sense of superiority."
"All would have been lost if it weren't for the Guardians of Camelot rising up against this threat once they learned of it. They have sworn an oath to protect England and all who live in it. So, upon learning of the wizard and his reign of terror, they came out from the Castle to meet and confront the elf in a final battle, a battle whose name is best never spoken to any human or creature. The battle was fierce and both sides fought fiercely for the wizard has great power and appears to have the advantage over his foes. When it seemed all hope is lost, Emrys, Leader of the Guardians, with the help of other Ancient Dragons and Druids, successfully defeated the wizard and imprisoned in another dimension behind a magic prison meant to protect England from the wizard himself, for Emrys knew that the wizard is responsible for another crime he committed long ago and has been waiting for the perfect moment to punish him for said crime once he found out."
"Despite the Guardians' victory over the wizard, however, a talented Druid Seer had a vision that one day, he will return. But, she was ignored for everyone else, expect for the guardians, is confident that the wizard will be imprisoned forever and forgotten as his name and actions are erased from the history books. Feeling bitter upon returning to her home, the Seer was greeted by a different vision: a new Guardian will appear and will be the first of her kind to become a Guardian of Camelot. Surprised, the Seer told the Guardians her vision and they listened ever since, they waited for the new guardian to appear, even believing they'll be their last hope against the wizard if they did indeed returned just as the fellow Druid, the Seer, predicted."
Nora reminded of it upon reading the part in her book about the vision of a new Guardian appearing that is not any creature she had every read and that a new human will be the first of their kind to become a new Guardian.
But before Nora can go deeper into her thinking, she started to feel extremely drowsy. She sniffled a weary yawn and headed towards the living room with the book underneath her arm. She placed it on the coffee table before she laid down on the couch and fell asleep, with a soft blanket that has a picture of a majestic lion strapped over her shoulders.
