The helicopter's hum resonated deep within my chest, each beat of the blades syncing unnervingly with my pulse. The wind screamed against the glass as the world outside blurred into darkness. Inside, my thoughts churned in a haze, a chaotic whirlwind of half-formed memories and the lingering echoes of Christian's voice. He was close, yet felt so distant, like he was speaking from behind a thick, impenetrable wall, his words muffled and distorted.
"She's not yours yet, give her some time," Christian had snapped earlier, his voice slicing through the fog like a blade. There was a sharpness, a frantic urgency that tugged at the edges of my consciousness. But before I could grasp his words, Pin's cold, unyielding response cut through, a tone that felt as icy as the void surrounding us.
"The timing isn't up for debate, Chris. You know the date. Consider yourself fortunate I'm not taking her down tonight."
I tried to focus, to ground myself in their argument, but everything was slipping away, the words crumbling like ash in my mind. The relentless thrum of the helicopter blades grew louder, almost unbearable, drowning out their voices and flooding my thoughts with its suffocating rhythm.
My stomach lurched as we began our descent. The vibrations of the landing pad buzzed through my bones, but I felt detached, as though my body was nothing more than a shell, an empty vessel being carried by the wind.
Cold air rushed in the moment we touched down, stabbing into my skin like shards of glass. I gasped, though the breath barely filled my lungs, the sensation of suffocation clinging to me like a second skin. Christian's arms tightened around me, pulling me against his chest. His heartbeat was a steady, relentless presence beneath my cheek, but even that felt distant-like a mirage in the chaos.
"Chris stop," I tried to say, my voice barely a whisper, swallowed by the deafening noise around us. I wasn't even sure if he heard me; his focus was unyielding, his gaze fixed ahead as he carried me through the icy darkness. The ground seemed to tilt beneath us, and I clung to the only solid thing in this whirlpool of madness-Christian's warmth, his strength.
The world outside was a dizzying blur of flashing lights and shadowy figures, moving too fast for me to process. My limbs were leaden, my body a traitor as I tried to push myself up, to resist the overwhelming urge to just give in. But my strength was gone, siphoned away by whatever force had me in its grip. All I could do was cling to Christian, his arms the only anchor in a world that felt like it was spinning out of control.
"Chris put me down," I murmured again, though it was futile. Christian's hold on me was ironclad, his pace determined as he carried me toward the looming structure ahead. His jaw was clenched, his muscles coiled, and I could feel the storm brewing beneath his surface. But even his anger, simmering and dark, felt like a distant echo.
Pin was waiting as we approached, his presence looming like a specter in the night. His expression was cold, unreadable, eyes calculating as they flicked between me and Christian. His gaze bore into me, dissecting, assessing-like I was just another variable to be measured, another broken piece to be fixed.
"She needs to be in a controlled environment," Pin said, his voice devoid of emotion, clinical and detached. The indifference in his tone made my skin crawl, made me feel like nothing more than a malfunctioning machine.
Christian's grip on me tightened, his voice low and dangerous. "She needs rest, not more experiments."
The tension between them thickened the air, a storm ready to unleash its fury. I could feel the battle of wills, crackling like static, threatening to tear the fragile calm apart. Christian's anger radiated off him in waves, while Pin stood there, cool and immovable, like stone.
