January 1995 - Hogwarts
It was time to go back to school. After only a week of being alone with Draco, it was time to face my fears. I had worked out a plan. I had told Cedric that he could tell everyone it was him that broke up with me, but I didn't know if he did or not. So I didn't know exactly what I was going to say. I figured if he told everyone that he left me, I would tell them that Draco was helping me get through it as friends. And if he hadn't told everyone that he left me, I would tell them that since Cedric and I broke up, I just started spending more time with my friends again. But there was no way of knowing what was going around. So all I could do was pray that nobody asked me. But as Draco held my hand discreetly, all I wanted to do was scream out how I was happy to have him as my boyfriend.
"Grace!" I heard a voice say. I turned around to see Jane running towards me. I dropped my bags to hug her.
"Oh my god," I said. "Tell me how it's only been a week since I've seen you."
"I don't know," she said. "Felt like forever. How was your break?"
"It was great," Draco said, holding both of our bags. "We had a great time. You?"
"Jane got to come with my family to New York," Blaise said. "It was great. We could have had a little more privacy, but it was still great." Jane laughed as she kissed Blaise. All I could think about was how I wish Draco and I could do that without worrying if anyone could see. But we had to do our best with what we could, and we were going to give it everything we had.
"So I feel like I know what you're going to say, but I still have to ask," Jane said as we unpacked in the dorms.
"Go ahead," I said.
"You just stayed at Malfoy Manor for the holidays," she said. "You and Draco disappeared at the ball. Are you sure there's nothing going on between you?" I laughed. It was so obvious. But all I had to do was deny it.
"Jane, I told you if anything develops between Draco and I, you will be the first to know," I said, lying to her face. I thought keeping Draco and I a secret would be hard, but it was actually really fun. It was like a secret game we could play, just the two of us. And the more people noticed us, the more fun it was to cover us up.
"Sorry, I just don't see it any other way. You don't even like him or anything?"
"Platonic with a capital P," I insisted.
"You're not even a little interested?" she persisted. "I mean how cool would it be if you and Draco were together, and Blaise and I were together."
"You and Blaise are together," I said.
"You know what I mean," she said.
"Can you just drop it?" I said. "There's nothing going on between Draco and me. We're just friends. Really good friends, but just friends. And if anything changes, I'll let you know."
"Friends tell each other stuff," she said.
"And I will tell you," I said. "If it happens. I'm still getting over Cedric."
"Speaking of Cedric," she said. "You never told me about..."
"Jane," I said sternly. "That topic of conversation is long gone."
Pansy walked in the door and froze at the sight of me. Jane and I exchanged looks. I had complete control of this girl. And I didn't have to worry about her taking Draco from me anymore. But I don't think she saw me as a threat as much as she was scared of me. I smirked at her as she walked past quickly. I had a boyfriend who I loved, I had my friends back, and I had instilled fear into Pansy Parkinson. A good semester was just around the corner.
