"I hate flag football." I grumble charging down the field with my best friend Hanna in tow.
"I wish I had a dollar for every time you said that Jo." She huffed.
"Someday." I smirked turning around in time to see a new face standing by coach.
"Did you hear me?" Hanna asks placing her hands on her hips and cocking her head.
"I certainly did not." I state returning my focus to the game.
"Are you actually interested in a boy? Joanna Stein."
"Boys are distractions of the worst kind Han. Focus!" I screeched as the other girls team completed a touch down.
I hear the whistle blow and sigh. More than ready for a shower now.
"You have mud all over you." She giggles flicking a piece off my back.
"As do you milady." I mock pulling a piece from her hair.
The closer we walk to the doors the weirder she seems to get. It's like watching a turtle crawl back into its shell. Her shoulders tense. Her breathings labored. She walks with her head up and facing forward like a soldier.
When we get to the locker room I grab my clothes and head to the showers. I wait for her to speak but she doesn't. Once I finish drying off I dress and comb my hair and fix my makeup.
"Hanna. You look like you've seen a ghost." I say crossing my arms finally.
"Come on. I'm starving." She states bursting through the locker room doors ahead of me. Sighing I follow her towards food.
Grabbing an apple and a bottle of water I sit on the bench outside that we claimed at the beginning of the year.
"Are you going to tell me what happened in two minutes or are we going to pretend it didn't happen?" I ask biting into my apple.
"Alec." She says picking at her salad with her fork.
"Ah. The mysterious ex boyfriend. What about him?" I ask cocking my head at her in concern.
"That's who that guy was that interrupted gym class." She states meeting my gaze.
I've know Hanna since kindergarten. She moved away when we were in third grade and came back two years ago. In the three years she was gone she had a pretty serious boyfriend. He was her me.
She never went into details but I know the guys a complete ass and time doesn't make that go away. He dumped her in the most humiliating way possible for no reason hence causing her sudden move back.
"Shit." I state placing my apple on the bench beside me. Not sure how to venture into this new territory. Hanna's had boyfriends since but she doesn't do serious anymore and now the reason is here. On our territory.
"It'll be fine." She sighs tossing her food into the can before brushing herself off. She helps me stand and we head inside to last period. Thankfully it's Friday and she's got the weekend to recuperate at Miles party on the lake.
