The drive to my parents seems longer now. Maybe it's the anxiety. It's only a little over five hours one way. Crazy to think that's all we're separated by. Usually we see each other for holidays.

As Hanna pulls into the driveway I say a thank you that it's just my mom here right now. I forgot sometimes dad works weekends.

Seeing us she comes running out. Hugs go around and then she helps with the luggage.

"Come on. I made lunch."

She hasn't questioned the missing Alec yet. I'm hoping she won't. I know my father will.

We file into the house stowing the bags in the guest rooms and following her to the kitchen. The roast smells fantastic. My mouth waters as we sit down and pass our plates around.

We dig in and the kids fill mom in on everything under the sun. I notice Emma stiffen when Alaska's brought up. I make a mental note to ask her about it later on.

I can't help but feel responsible for her not enjoying it anymore. She worries about her brother and I too much. I offer to wash the dishes and mom lets me. Probably glad to have some help.

Emma and Reid go with Hanna to unpack but I notice my mother lingering.

"How's work?" I ask her.

"Busy. So is your dad but he's off tomorrow."

Her words seem to have a double meaning. I arch my brow.

"That's great the kids missed you both."

"Yes. Well we haven't heard from you in a few months." She states. Apparently we're doing this now then.

"I've left Alec." I state ripping the bandaid off.

She smiles sadly at me and I shrug.

"I thought it might be something like that. We can talk more later." She says squeezing my hand and leaving the room.

Did everyone around me see the end way before I did? Hanna was the only one surprised when I told her what I had done.

I shove the thought aside and finish the dishes before joining everyone outside at the bad mitten nets.
