The Last Message (pt. 3)

By 11 o'clock the next day, Lucas was staring at his slowly barren bedroom. Boxes were scattered everywhere, labeled with their contents. Not much was left in his room. His high school debate trophies sat in a box, along with his other achievements he had accumulated over the years. Ribbons, certificates, and medals, all sat in his 'Cool Nerd Medals (academic records)'.
Another box contained the Marvel comics and posters and action figures that had been stripped from his walls and shelves.

His other box contained an assortment of books that he had read at least a bajillion times, but could never get over them. The only things that still gave the room a tiny bit of life were the endless pictures and polaroids of Avery and him. He let her decorate a small part of his room, dedicated to just him and her. He had kept every single thing she gave him in a shoe box. Small sticky notes she used to leave in his locker in high school, the first bracelet she ever made him, well worn, and retired, when it broke off during one of his football games, the glasses from their first movie date, her flower crown she made for him in 9th grade, which he pressed between the pages of his favorite book, to preserve, a burger king crown from after her first state volleyball championship win, cute love notes, and the most recent addition, her claw clip, a simple black one, but he felt so happy to own it. The corner had vines and the polaroids had been clipped with tiny clothes pins.

His eyes crinkled as he smiled at his beautiful girlfriend and the memories he had with her

His eyes crinkled as he smiled at his beautiful girlfriend and the memories he had with her. The blessings he had were numerous, and he thanked God for them. He scanned his room for any unnecessary items that could be packed away, but found few. Suddenly, his door burst open, and Avery flopped onto his bed.
"Hey, you goof! Your mom let me in," she giggled and kicked off her lifted white Converse.

He immediately tackled her and smiled, "Hey, sweetheart! I was about to pack up my sweaters, but I'll let you pick a few out, before I do," Lucas chuckled, embracing her with a hug.

Avery's light ocean blue eyes lit up with excitement and she squealed, "Really? You'd let me do that?"

" 'Course I would, pretty girl! Now pick 2-3 that you like, and I'll pack the rest of them away," he gave her a quick squeeze before grabbing a nearby box, and labeled it, 'Sweaters/Hoodies'.

She jumped up and opened his closet. It was almost barren, except for the many hoodies, sweatshirts, and jackets that were hung by various hangers. She immediately picked out 2 sweatshirts and a jacket.

He let out an exaggerated groan and said, "You really had this all planned, huh? The light blue one brings out your eyes. It's perfect for you! Well, you're perfect already, but-"

She jabbed him playfully and replied, "Oh shut up, Mr. Harvard Law. I really like the material on the Spidey one, plus I just like the plain white. And thirdly, you're football Letterman jacket? Admittedly, I've wanted this for years. Remember when I cheered for you in that one game against the Tornadoes and then after you made a touchdown, you ran up to me and kissed me? And we..."

And there we were, both laughing and remembering the amazing memories of the past. Eventually, we packed up some more stuff, ate some dinner, and I drove her home in my Ford F-150. I have to keep the cowboy stereotype going. Anyways, right before she left, she gave me a little speech.

"Mr. Lucas Alessandro Harrison. I know you leave for the great Harvard Law School, but you better not forget. Now I love you, but you better not forget me, or I'll pound your head so hard, you'll forget your own name, I-"

He slyly brought his hands to her jaw and brushed his thumb over her lips and mumbled, "Oh will you now? I wanna see you try, sweetheart,"

She gently took both of his hands and shook her head thoughtfully.

"I'm serious, you goof. Don't forget your roots, too. You may be a lawyer at Harvard, but you're also a small town someone. God made you that way, and He's got great things planned, so don't waste time on stupid stuff. Do you're absolute best, and do me proud, but also live a little. Like I say, ride or die. And finally, know your worth. Don't let a little New Yorker or whatever trample you with their jim jams, but don't be rude. Be firm, and stand your ground. I love you, Lucas, and I'm so incredibly proud of you, and how far you've come. You constantly inspire me to push harder and do better. I love you, my boy. Now, mister, I gotta go. I told my parents I'd be home by midnight, and it's ten til," Avery gathered her things but was stopped by Lucas's hand one her chinn

A mischievous glint shone in his eyes and he said, "Now wait a minute, Aves. You forgot to give me my goodnight kiss. Hmm?"

Avery looked up at him and blushed profusely, before placing a tiny peck on his cheek and drawing away.

     "There you go, Luke. Good-"

"Ah, ah, ah. Come back here, silly girl. I'm not done with you," He gently but firmly pulled her back to him and cupped her face and kissed her deeply. She softly moaned and her hands reached up to his hair to pull him in closer. She tilted her head and kissed him softly. He drew back for a second and inhaled sharply.

"Gosh, Avery, I love you. Every single piece of you. Your silky blonde hair, your freckled cheeks, your smile, gosh, it does something to me. You're silly giggle you do, the little arm thing you do when you're excited, your little snort when you're so happy, your light sky blue eyes, your voice that sounds like a siren call, it just- ahh, I can't get enough of it. Your constant positive energy, your teases that make a warm feeling in my stomach, your little quips every now and then, your chaotic crazy personality. I love it, and I don't want anyone else to have that. You're mine, and I'm not letting anyone take you away. I don't deserve any of this, but you've found a way to bring a whole new light in my life, and I can't let that go. You're literally hewn into me. You're a piece of me. Everywhere I go, I see you, and it makes me so frickin' happy that I can be in your life. That I-" and he kissed her again. Devoured her. Made her feel like she was the only one that matter in the moment. He drew back and whispered, "I love you, if you didn't know." He hugged her tightly one last time, and let her go.

Grinning from ear to ear, she stammered, "I love you too, Luke. T-Thank you. I don't deserve you. Honestly. I have to go now or the 'rents'll chew my ear off. I love you, my perfect boy. Forever and always. Drive home safely, babe. Have a goodnight and I love you, Lucas. I love youuuu!" she climbed out of the truck and walked to her door. She turned around and gave him a final wave, before closing the oak door.

He sighed contentedly and drove out of her driveway. He flipped on the high beams, and drove along, soft guitar music in the background,  when he saw a car approach. Lucas lowered the high beams, but the opposite car didn't. Suddenly...
