----------------------------------------------------------------------------

it was 11th grade.

I had transferred to a new school, since my parents couldn't stand their grading methods. I guess those mattered more than the friends, well, friend I had. To them I was just a machine, pushing out the good grades, and in return, them controlling me and making me achieve harder tasks. I hated it, but I was already sucked in. What was the point of escaping when I was already in?

Jeremiah slipped into his freshly ironed uniform pants and slipped on a plain white dress shirt, buttoning all but the top one. He reluctantly tied his tie and quickly added product to his hair, the dark brown curls framing his head. He let out a sigh of frustration, grabbed his bag, and walked out of his room.

Now Jeremiah wasn't just an ordinary guy. His parents were the best lawyers in his state, and he was following in their footsteps. They had accumulated a lot of wealth, and were currently living in a huge mansion in New York. Jeremiah saw his parents scurry past him, not even acknowledging him with a loving 'good morning'. His family's nanny, Cara, was already up. She gave him a beaming smile and declared, "Good morning, my blue Jay!"

A grin broke out on Jeremiah's face and he hugged the middle aged lady. She set his breakfast of his usual smoothie bowl and protein shake in front of him. He kissed her forehead in a 'thank you' and watched as his bubbly little 7 year old sister, Gabriella, or 'Els', as he called her, bounded into the kitchen.

" 'morning, Els," he mumbled, scarfing down his smoothie bowl, and checking his watch.

" 'morning blue Jay," she squealed and ran to give him a hug.  He squeezed her tightly, as only a loving older brother could. She slid into the breakfast bar and thanked her nanny, eating her smoothie bowl.

"Hurry up, El Bells, or I'm gonna be late to school. You don't wanna miss show and tell today. Make sure to put your special bracelet in your bag," Jeremiah called out, shoving the rest of the fruit from his smoothie bowl into his mouth and running to the bathroom to brush his teeth. His reflection stared back at him. He looked nearly the same as his father. Italian, Tall, strong build, wide, square shoulders, strong jawline, caramel tanned skin, and dark brown curly hair. The only difference was his blue eyes, which he got from his mom. Still, he scowled at his appearance, and quickly called for his sister.

She bounded into the car and put her light pink bookbag next to her seat. He walked out the door, before hearing his mother call him.

"Jeremiah Cattaneo. Look at me when I speak to you, please." She gave him a stern look. His mother, Athena Grace-Cattaneo was, well she was gorgeous. Curled light brown hair, shining blue eyes, a slim hourglass figure, full lips, and a height of 5'7, there was nothing she couldn't conquer.

Slowly bringing his gaze up to his mother, he made hard eye contact with her as she frowned.

"Your father and I are going away on a business emergency. Cara will take care of you. Don't stay out too late and make sure you study hard for the upcoming AP Calculus quiz. Your last score of 98 didn't impress me. You're better than this. Now head to school and get good grades. You are a Cattaneo. A captain. A leader. Show them who you are. She quickly planted a kiss on his cheek and resumed to getting ready.

Jeremiah's expression hardened and he shut the front door.

Will I ever be enough? Are my grades not good enough? I'm a failure. I'm a disappointment.

He hopped in the front seat of his car and looked in the rearview mirror. His sister beamed at him, and he couldn't help but smile at her. She made him happy. I'll make sure she's the happiest little sister.

"Buckle up, El Bells. We gotta be safe. There you go." he smiled and started to drive.

"Hey Jay? I- I have a question," she smiled at him, and he nodded as he waited.

"Why aren't mommy and daddy smiling anymore?"

His grip on the wheel tightened, knuckles turning white. If he hadn't been at a stoplight, he might have sped off right there.

"Because they are busy, El Bells. You aren't busy, though. So when you smile, it makes up for mommy and daddy."

She gave him a lopsided grin and giggled, "Just like this?"

He quickly checked and smiled, "Exactly."

He pulled into her elementary school, and found a parking spot. Putting on her backpack and grabbing her small hand into his, she pulled him to her classroom, where he dropped her off. Waving to her gently, he walked through the crowded halls, staring at the parents who flooded the halls.

Why couldn't my parents put time into us instead. Every single day, they make the same excuse. I'm tired of their absolute bullcrap.

He moved to the right to avoid bumping into people, but as he did, a girl tripped and he instinctively caught her.

"I'm so so sorry about that. I didn't mean to be so clumsy, my niece was-"

Jeremiah let out a half smile and murmured,

"It's alright, darling."
