Why so serious?

Alchemist didn't sleep well that night. She kept tossing and turning in her bed, attempting to fall asleep. When she did, her dreams weren't merciful on her. Once she woke up, she wasn't going to risk having another nightmare. She sat in the corner of her bed, staring at the crystal's warm light. It was the only thing she could possibly find comfort in that night. After hours of mindlessly gazing at the gem, the sun finally rose. Seeing the red glow fading in the light of the sun, she got up and went downstairs. She made her way to the kitchen, hoping a good breakfast would make her feel better. As she was making it, she couldn't stop thinking about the gem and it's strange appearance. It reminded her of a ruby but it didn't exactly feel like a ruby. She knew there was something more to it. It was a magical object, after all. She tried not to think about it too much when she sat down to eat, but she couldn't help it. Strange beauty of it made her wonder. That was, until Vampire Cookie dragged his feet to the dinning room with his usual, careless smile.
-'Morning.' he said as he lazily sat down. Alchemist didn't respond. She looked down at her food, avoiding looking at him. She wasn't sure if it was the lack of sleep or the way he spoke to her, but she found herself burning with anger as soon as he walked in. She'd often get mad at him but this time it was different. More... Serious..? She couldn't tell.
-'What's up?' he asked. No answer.
-'What? Ya mad at me?'
Vampire looked at her a bit more closely. She had bags under her eyes, her hair was a mess, she didn't change her clothes to pajamas nor did she look like she washed at all. It was very unusual for her.
-'Ya fell asleep like that?' he said lightly, trying to ease the tension.
-'Non of your business.' she groaned, still staring at her food. She was eating slowly but if she was to be honest, she didn't feel hungry at all. Her brother felt a bit uncomfortable. She wasn't the type to act like that. Screaming? Sure! Nagging him about everything he does? All the time! But this? This wasn't his typical no-fun sister.
-'Ey, I can tell something's bothering ya.'
-'And?' she asked annoyed.
-'It's not like you would care.'
-'Well, I kinda do so-'
-'SO WHAT!?' she snapped as she looked at him furious. Vampire jumped in his chair, hearing her cold, hateful scream. They sat in silence for a while before Alchemist Cookie got up and went upstairs. She didn't exactly understand why she did that nor why she felt this way. She tried to convince herself that it was because of the difficult night she had, but she wasn't true if that was the case. She unconsciously slammed the door behind her. She turned to the crystal as it was the only thing she was thinking about other than her outburst. It's glowing aura had seemed to get brighter. She wondered if the sun had something to do with it, as she stepped closer.
-'Maybe the sunlight is fueling up the glow? And if so then can other sources of light do it? And can the sun make it glow even brighter?'
One other thing Alchemist noticed was that the glow felt more... Mischievous. She quickly brushed the thought of, explaining to herself that she must've felt bad about yelling at her brother. She just wasn't yet aware that she felt bad because she was still angry. She reached for her notebook and pencil that were laying on the table and started writing about her discoveries and theories about the gem. She was glad that she didn't tell anyone about it yesterday. She wanted to do the research on her own. Seeing that the crystal did indeed have reactions of it's own, she didn't need anyone's help.
