"What's wrong, John?" Gaz asked, who had just collected the chopping boards from the children.
Soap and he had to help out as substitute teachers in a primary school as punishment for the two of them disobeying orders, as there are simply too few teachers.
Of course Soap had refused at first, he is a soldier, not a teacher or someone who take care of children, but unfortunately he had no choice. The same was also for Gaz.
"This kid is kind of different from the others," Soap said, looking at the brown-haired kid sitting alone at a table eating the fruit salad they had prepared together.
"Not every child is the same, John"
"No-, yes every child is different, but I meant he's acting kind of weird," Soap tried to explain, but didn't take his eyes off the child.
Now Gaz was looking too.
"Why don't you talk to Simon?" he suggested.
Soap just nodded and walked towards the child.
Simon was very different from the other children, and not only in character.
He was quite quiet and introverted. He always worked alone in class, and in the breaks he always sat alone on some bench and watched the others play.
He also noticed that Simon was quite thin and often had bruises on his body.
"So, does it taste good?" he asked and sat down next to Simon, who flinched a little.
He didn't say anything at first and just stared at Soap.
"...yes," he sounded uncertain. Like he would be afraid to say something wrong.
Soap smiled at him nicely.
"That's good. Don't you want to play with the others? Aren't you bored?"
"A little, but I'd rather not."
"Why is that?"
Simon looked away. He was unsure and didn't know what to say.
Soap noticed this immediately.
"Do you like Uno?"
Simon nodded, "I used to play that with Mum."
"Do you want to play that?"
Soap stood up and picked up the game after the little boy hesitantly nodded.
Together the two played a few rounds while Soap tried to find out something about him.
The more time Soap spent with Simon, the more the boy opened up. He was no longer so insecure and distant towards Soap. He's quite attached to him.
"Johnny!", Soap paused his conversation with Gaz and looked to Simon, who ran to him excitedly.
"What's up, Simon?", he squatted down a bit to be at eye level with him.
"Look!" Simon held a picture in front of his face, smiling.
