ACT I: Chapter Two

The Silver Knight spent the whole night helping with preparations.

They were tired after having gone on a what may have been a wild goose chase searching for the Prince in Latissa. Their fatigue only turned into exhaustion when they helped set up tables, chairs, decorations, and the stage where the King and the Prince would be seated at the front of the ballroom.

In the waking hours of the morning, they sat against the wall in a corner as the day-shift servants came in and picked up where the night-shift workers left off.

They did their best to keep their eyes open but couldn't help letting them close shut. It'll only be for a minute, just enough to get my bearings together, they assured themselves.

Not a second later, they were conked out on the floor snoring.

They were eventually woken up from their brief nap by a group of palace scouts who needed their help to hang up some large banners.

The tables were decorated in white and red table cloth, the centerpieces were large and grand vases of exotic and eye-catching flowers. Big tapestries hung from the wall detailing different objects or positions of the Royal Guard.

The Royal Guard Ceremony, though only open to higher-class families who received an invitation, would be broadcasted across the Boiling Isles. The ceremony awarded any of those working under the Royal Guard and commemorated the efforts of brave palace scouts, castle officials, and sometimes gave out outstanding citizen awards to those who deserved it.

The King would be the one to give out the awards and the speeches, but in the Silver Knight's case, that was the Prince's job.

Now, at the actual ceremony itself,  the Silver Knight blinked wearily as the loud music and chatter filled the air. They were barely aware of their surroundings and every time someone spoke to them they stared back with a perplexed face and said, "Huh?"

In their defense, everything sounded muffled and they could hardly process anything else. It was as if they were wearing earmuffs.

The ballroom was filled with various wealthy families from across the Isles. Elves and demons decked out in their finest clothes danced to the live music on the balcony above while others sat at the tables waiting for the food to be served.

Towards the front of the ballroom, closest to the stage, long rectangular tables were filled up by palace scouts, captains, and advisors.

On the stage, the curtains were drawn and the two velvet cushioned seats remained unoccupied.

For those who were invited to the ceremony, the event was fun and entertaining. But for those actually in the Royal Guard, the ceremony was only the most boring party ever. They were ordered to stay put for the entirety of the ceremony.

Bored of out their mind, the Silver Knight played with their silverware. They came up with ways to turn a kitchen knife into a seriously lethal weapon in the scenario that the Prince and them got cornered again and the only weapon at their disposal was a knife.

Eberwolf sat next to them, growling and snarling things that they didn't understand. But the two played a silent yet intense game of who could make the best origami animal using napkins.

Both Silver and Eber got bored of this pretty quickly, as Eberwolf was clearly the better napkin folder.

So instead, Eber initiated a conversation with Darius, who sat next to him. Darius seemed to be the only one who actually understood what the biped demon said. How this was possible was a mystery.
