The dorm was quiet when I walked in, I could see light going out of V's room and there was some soft music that you could only hear if you were looking for it. I smiled before making my way to my room. After setting my things down I pulled my laptop out and started to do research. A week was hardly enough time to create a design that would show the class who you were. The others in the class seemed to be hiding their designs from the view of others, which of course was silly to me, we had all gotten into the school by being unique, I wouldn't doubt that the professor had our portfolios, what would the point of copying be? I shook my thoughts off and got to work.
Two hours later, I heard a soft knock at my door, "come in," I turned myself away from my laptop and towards the door. V walked in, she was still dressed in day clothes despite it already being almost 11 pm. "What's up?"
"Do you want to go get food with me? I haven't left my room in hours," She leaned against the doorway, she looked pretty.
"Yeah, of course, I would love to." I got up and grabbed a sweater off my desk chair, "What are you craving?"
She shrugged and started walking away, I walked after her, "What's good around here? You said that you've lived here all your life, right? There ought to be something that you like over everything else."
"There's a really good hotpot place that's open 24/7, we can go there," We made it to the door, she nodded and we silently put our shoes on.
The two of us made our way to the parking lot. The whole way we were silent, and I kind of realized that this was almost a date. Well, not a date I guess, but we were hanging out, alone, for the first time. This could completely change our friendship (and hopefully, our relationship), so there was no way I could fuck it up. With this, I decided I had to do the best that I could. Once we made it to my car, I rushed to open the door for her, she gave me a weird look, so maybe not the right approach. Regardless, I got into the car and turned to her.
"The place is like, 20 minutes away, so do you wanna pick the music or should I?" I started to turn my car on, at least to warm it up. I glanced over to her and she was already looking at me, I smiled a bit. "What?"
She shook her head and then stretched her hand out for my phone, which I handed over, as she was typing I decided to start driving. A few seconds later, music started to play. I glanced over at the screen and laughed a bit. Laufy seemed fitting. The music was pretty nice, it made the drive less awkward.
We finally made it to the place, of course, as we walked in and got seated, V hadn't said anything. "Is everything okay?" I asked once we had time to talk to each other.
"What? Oh, yeah, everything is okay. I just like watching," She smiled at me, which made me smile. I nodded at her, remembering that she liked quiet and quiet people, so I shut up.
The two of us sat in silence for maybe 30 minutes before she started a conversation, "You said that you're doing fashion right? What's that like?"
"It's... fun, very interesting. It's somewhat intense though, nobody trusts each other, especially since the most fame any of us have is on social media. I don't understand it though, they're more likely to get their designs stolen by the people they do internships for than other students" I spoke as I was cooking the meat, of course handing it to her first before making mine.
"Sounds interesting," She started eating and I followed suit.
"It's kind of silly," The rest of our conversation went like this, small comments as we ate. As we continued to talk, I wondered a bit more about V and their life, how they grew up, and if they had siblings, I wanted to know everything about her. However, asking was kinda scary. For a while, we sat in silence until I built up enough courage to ask her. "Hey, V? If you don't mind me asking, what was it like when you were growing up? You mentioned that you lived a few hours away, how was that?"
V paused for a second, her eyes focused on dipping the meat in sauce before she glanced back up at me. Her eyes were so pretty, but now they seemed softer than usual, almost vulnerable. "Well," She paused, setting down her chopsticks, "It wasn't all that great, my parents had a view for my future, and that future did not include art school, or me dating another woman."
I tried to hide my confusion, but it probably wasn't as hidden as I thought it was. From the small amount that I had seen (aka me stalking her art account), she was incredibly talented, how could someone see her work and then not support her going to art school? "That probably sucked, I'm sorry" My hand reached for hers, very lightly touching her fingers before pulling away.
"It did for a while," Her eyes were now on her hand, and I blushed. "However, I kind of realized that I could never be what they wanted. So we talked, well I talked and forced them to listen, and I stood my ground, I was going to art school no matter what."
"So, art school, I'm glad you're here," I smiled at her, but she was focused on cooking another piece of meat. "Hmmm, how did you come out? If it's okay for me to ask." I was hoping not to push my limits with this.
V looked back up at me, her stare a bit colder, but I kept eye contact, I wanted her to feel safe with me, "It was harder than art school. There was a lot of fighting, a lot of them trying to convince me that what I was feeling was just teenage rebellion or some bullshit. Eventually, they came to terms with it. More so my ultimatum, 'either you accept that I like girls or you never see me again when I go off to college.' It kinda sucked to do that to my parents, but it's what we both needed. They chose me over the church, obviously" She laughed and her eyes went back to the soft gaze I was slowly growing more fond of.
"Well, thank you for sharing with me." She nodded and once again, that electric energy I had felt earlier was back, this time she broke eye contact.
We continued our meal, in a comfortable silence. It was nice getting to know more about V, and I hoped that this night had brought us closer together. As we were finishing up the last bites of food, v broke the silence. "Thanks for bringing me here."
"Of course! The food is good right?" I smiled at her, and she nodded.
"Hm, the food was okay, but I think the good company made it better." She said, and I started coughing, choking on my food slightly. I was no doubt blushing, so I looked away from her for a while, just to hear her giggling.
"I'm glad that you think that... I liked going out with you," I looked back up at her and smiled, the eye contact was short as I decided I couldn't look at her or I would blush even more. "Should we go pay?"
She nodded, so we stood up and went to pay. Once outside the cool night air hit our skin. We walked side by side, enjoying the energy coming off of both of us. The car ride to the dorm was nice. We spent it with V playing some of her favorite artists, (so I learned she was a big fan of Laufy and Cigarettes After Sex). However, the ride back felt shorter than the one there, maybe because we were closer.
Once we made it to the door, taking off our shoes and jackets, we stood at the doorway, staring at each other again. Before I walked away V smiled, "Hey, thank you for tonight. I had a really good time."
"I did too, thank you for asking me," I started to leave before I turned to her again, "For the record, I'm looking forward to getting to know you. Let's spend more time together... alone.''
V's eyes looked back at me, surprised this time, and even a faint blush, "Uh, yeah. Let's do it" I nodded and smiled at her before walking into my room.
After getting ready for bed, I couldn't help but smile. Tonight had gone better than I could've expected. I was excited to see what would happen, how our relationship (yes relationship, she was gonna be my girlfriend), and even more excited for the school year knowing that me and her living together was also a guarantee that we would get close. This would be good. With a final laugh to myself, I put my earbuds in and fell asleep.
