Maraya is a peaceful place but it lacks access to education.
I have always put my eye on the lack of education and access to education when I first got here, and I am happy to see that Maraya is already thriving in this aspect.
"Jakob pushed through with building schools for the children here in Maraya. He was the mayor when he was able to build schools for Maraya. Jakob was really motivated in doing it thinking that it would please you when you come back. How did I know? Because it was evident. Ikaw lang naman ang bukangbibig ng lalaking 'yon."
The more I listened to Ghem, the more I see how Jakob changed over time—it is a good change.
It warms my heart when I know that he made the project with me as part of the reason.
Habang papunta sa isa sa mga paaralan na bagong tayo, napansin ko na lahat ng daan ay naka-semintado.
I used to complain about mud in this place, but now there isn't that could put discomfort on me.
I should not feel too sentimental because of this. All along I was too preoccupied thinking that people would not change just because I wasn't here.
Maturing is realizing that the world does not revolve around you—the world will continue with or without you.
"I have always had a soft heart for Maraya because it feels like home," I said and looked at my sister.
"This is home. You are home with Hacob and us. 'Di man natin alam kung ano ang rason ng daddy sa kung bakit tayo pinaghiwalay, at least we now know that somehow fate has destined us to have this life—a life of experience."
Inabot ni Ghem ang kamay ko at hinawakan ito.
"Thank you, Ghem. You truly are the miracle in here."
I have always had an issue with that word and/or term because of the past.
I hated the name Miracle, but life has made me realize its true meaning.
"I am the miracle of Maraya, but you are the Miracle of the people here in Maraya," Ghem said.
I looked at her confused.
She smiled and looked away from me to see the people outside waiting for our arrival.
Ghem looked back and there was sadness in her smile.
"Our mom hated that name—the name Miracle. She hates it when she was reminded of the failed marriage. Dad was the one who named me Miracle and it was enough to put Mom in a sour mood." Napayuko siya sa sinabi.
"I thought dad love mom, though I know something was wrong with their marriage but I know that dad loves her."
Umiling siya at tiningnan ako sa mata,
"Dad loves our mom, that's true. Mom was the problem because she was in love with another man before their arranged marriage."
Nanghina ako sa mga narinig.
This is my first time knowing all of this. How can Dad hide this all from me?
My parents' broken marriage was a product of a marital arrangement.
Dad should know better than to push me or my sister to another marriage that ultimately resulted in the same failure.
"Mom was used to calling me Lady Ghem rather than that name, kaya ang mga tao dito ay tinatawag ako bilang Ghem. We only had the issue of that name when I came back. Nalilito ako sa mga panahon na 'yun dahil nandito ka na. I did not even know that I have a younger brother."
