A small brunette ran across the lanes, pickpocketing oblivious nobels and hiding away to the lanes. The child climbed ontop of roofs and made her way to her shack of a house, inside were two younger boys, a younger girl and a woman on a broken up matress.
"Sister!" one of the boys said, smiling as the girl went inside, holding a sachel of stolen goods.
"Tali, when will it be my turn to help you?" another one asked, the girl shook her head,
"Father said that all of you will work in the mines when you're old enough, not to be theifs like me" she smiled, opening the bag and getting out a few items.
Leftovers of food, a small stack of coins, a watch and a book.
"Why did you find a book?" the younger sister asked, picking it up and looking at it.
"Mother said that she would teach me to read if I found a book for her... Is she sleeping?" the girl asked, looking up to see the woman on her side, facing the wall.
"She is..." one boy replied, "Father said that we'll be able to buy the medicine soon though!"
"That's amazing Charles, once Mother is healthy, we'll be able to work towards abetter home"
-
"The truth is, the folks' fancy that such and such things cannot be, simply because... they have not seen them, is worth no more than a savage's fancy that there cannot be such a thing as a locomotive, because he never saw one running wild in the forest..." the sick women spoke, growing tired nearer the end,
"You can stop Mother, I can read the rest for you"
"My sweet girl," she smiled wearly, her brown eyes threatening to close, "We'll finish it together, I promise"
The child nodded, smiling and agreeing.
-
"Father? Look what I found!" she said, walking into the shack but stopping immediately as she saw her father looking defeated, "Father..?"
She noticed that her brothers were all gone, even the youngest sister.
"Father? Where are my sibllings?"
The man stayed silent, holding a beer bottle in his hand and looking up to see his daughter holding her bag tightly. Her eyebrows knotted and she tried to step into the place further.
"Where were you." his voice broke, tears in his eyes,
"I-I..." she looked at the body on the bed as it layed motionless, she looked straight at her father again and back at the body, "I-I was getting this-!" she pulled out a great stack of coins she stole from a house.
"You're too fucking late Natalia!" he roared, getting up and hitting the girl with all the force he could use; bruising her horribly and she screamed,
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" she cried, yelling and sobbing.
"ALL SHE WANTED WAS YOU! NOT ME! HER HUSBAND!" he continued, he cried and kicked the girl's bleeding body as she fell to the ground, "All for a pathetic book?! She wanted to finish it with you huh? What did you do for her to need to see you on her fucking deathbed?!"
"I-I'm.. S-sorry..." the girl bearly squealed out before unconsioussness took place.
