"There's something 'bout the way
The street looks when it's just rained
There's a glow off the pavement, you walk me to the car
And you know I wanna ask you to dance right there
In the middle of the parking lot, yeah
We're driving down the road, I wonder if you know
I'm trying so hard not to get caught up now
But you're just so cool, run your hands through your hair
Absentmindedly making me want you"
- "Fearless (Taylor's Version)" by Taylor Swift

"Connor, c'mon!" I yell over my shoulder at my best friend. He's taking forever to get to the car and it's stressing me out.

"I'm coming! Calm down." He grumbles. As if I'm the one stressing him out.

"You know prom isn't waiting for us, right?" I complain as I rush to the car. We're already running a half hour late and it's gonna be later than that by the time we get there.

Connor rolls his eyes. "You're so impatient."

I stop when I make it to the front door. "Con, it's pouring." I whine. "Now my hair and my dress and makeup are gonna be all screwed up."

"It's not a huge deal, Y/N. I'll grab an umbrella and you'll be fine." He assures me as he moves to the hall closet to grab an umbrella.

"Are you finally ready?" I ask anxiously.

"Yes. C'mon."

Connor holds the umbrella for me and makes sure I don't get wet, completely ignoring how he does anyway. He seems a little anxious during the ride to the venue, a local country club in town, but I push it out of my mind because I don't want to make a big deal out of it.

By the time we get there, it's stopped raining and the ground is coated with a layer of water. The sun is coming back out and it's honestly gorgeous. And honestly? So is Connor. The entire ride here, I was watching him. A little creepy, but it's true. He looks different tonight. Somehow more relaxed. And amazing. Really amazing.

"Y/N, you coming?" Connor asks as he opens the door. "Let's go."

"So, baby, drive slow 'til we run out of road
In this one horse town, I wanna stay right here
In this passenger seat
You put your eyes on me
In this moment now, capture it, remember it"

"Hey, Con?" I pause as we're walking into the building.

Connor stops in front of me and turns around. "Yeah?"

"How about we skip prom? And like just drive around or something?"

If at all possible, Connor relaxes even more. "Of course. Let's go, princess."

My face flushes at the new name, but I gladly take his hand when he holds it out and follow as he runs to the car. I know tonight is gonna be even better than we ever imagined.

"I probably should have thought about this before we spent so much money on tickets and outfits." I admit sheepishly as Connor opens the door for me.

He shrugs it off. "Don't worry about it. As long as we have fun, that's what matters. Even if it's not what we planned." He holds my hand and helps me into the car, closing the door behind me.

He gets into the drivers seat and starts the car before turning his attention to me. "So, where are we going?"

I think for a moment. "How about we stop and get some snacks and then we can just park in one of the empty fields in town and relax for a while?"
