As soon as the bell rang signaling the end of morning classes, Rin rushed out of her classroom (Math; her least favorite) and pulled out her phone to text Len.
Rin-Rin: where r u???
Banana Bitch🍌: thot u were eating by urself this year, hmm?
Rin-Rin: stfu where r u eating
Banana Bitch🍌: in the courtyard
Rin-Rin: thnx
Rin walked towards the courtyard, wanting to talk to someone. She was feeling a little antsy, so a familiar face, even if it was an annoying face, was going to be much appreciated.
As expected, Len was eating lunch with his whole group. They were all taking up a picnic bench, besides Len and Fukase, who were sitting on the ground against an old fountain that didn't work anymore. Len was resting in between Fukase's legs on the ground, leaning back onto his chest ("It's called a bromance, Rin,"). Oliver was carefully setting out all of his food on a napkin, and Flower and Piko were complaining about their morning classes.
Rin sighed, and sat beside Flower on the edge of the picnic table bench where the rest of them sat. "You know there's more room on the bench, right?" She said, adressing the two on the ground.
"Yeah, we're all good here," Len said. He was scrolling on his phone, not looking up when Rin arrived.
"Thanks for the concern, Rin," Fukase said.
Rin scowled. "Hi, Flower, Piko," she said, looking away from Len and Fukase towards the more pleasent people in the group.
"Hi, Rin, how were your first few classes?" Flower asked.
Rin shrugged. "Fine. Homeroom's good at least,"
"Oh, IA told me," Flower said, a small smirk playing at her lips. "You were apparently chatting it up with a certain Hatsune Miku?"
Len looked up. "HUH?" he yelled, looking like Flower had just revealed that Rin was secretly pregnant, not that she was speaking with a pretty girl. Rin felt she should be offended that Len was that shocked, but chose to give him a first-day-of-school pass.
"Can't keep anything from you guys, huh?" Rin said dully. She didn't know whether to be annoyed or impressed that her being friendly with Miku had been brought to Flower's attention so quickly. "And we weren't 'chatting it up', we were partnered up for a project."
"Oh, that makes sense then," Len said, leaning back again. Rin felt like slapping him.
"You two seemed to really hit it off, though, hm? Discussing singing, and whatnot," Flower persisted, obviously trying not to giggle. Oliver was staring at Rin, clearly very interested by his first taste of High School gossip.
"We were just talking, being friendly, okay?" Rin said. Maybe it was better to just eat alone after all.
"She's like, really gorgeous!" Len said. "I wish I could be partnered up with her. Plus she's super popular, I'm surprised no one else tried to be her partner first,"
"I told you, it was assigned partners," Rin said. "And Flower, why does IA know so much about what Miku and I talked about?"
"Oh, her good friend, Teto, is best friends with Miku," Flower explained.
"I didn't know," Rin said.
"Oh, yeah, they only started hanging out around a month ago, but I guess they got pretty close fast," Flower said.
"That's nice," Rin said, nodding. She was glad other people were appreciating IA's kind soul and gentle personality.
"So apparently Miku liked you enough to talk about you with her friends," Flower pointed out.
"That doesn't mean anything. I'm talking about her with you guys right now, aren't I?" Rin said.
"And she left enough of an impression on you that you're doing so!" Len said.
"Because someone brought it up for no reason!" Rin said, looking at Flower accusingly. "Look, nothing is going on. I don't want to talk about this anymore," she felt like she had been saying that a lot lately. The list of things Rin didn't want to talk about just kept growing longer and longer.
Flower shrugged. "Alright. Oliver, how were your first classes?"
"I couldn't find my science room," Oliver said. "And I had to ask this big, scary senior for help!"
"It was a 4'10 girl with a Sailor Moon t-shirt," Piko interjected.
The rest of them continued to talk about their days so far. Rin tuned out their conversation, thinking more about Miku. It was nice that she seemed to think Rin was worth talking about... but she knew a lot of people. She was super popular, just like Len had said. Ending up mixed up with so many people was something Rin really didn't like the thought of. She kept reminding herself that she just needed to stay quiet, keep her head down, and get through school without incident. And that meant not making friends with such a social girl .
It's better this way, Rin told herself.
"Look who's over there, Rin-Rin," Fukase said suddenly, a hit of taunting in his voice.
Rin glaced over to where the red-haired boy was looking. There, sitting beside the school garden, was Miku, with three other girls. One was the blonde who was in their homeroom, the other had big red curls, and the third was wearing a cute orange tank top and had bright green hair.
"That's her cousin, Neru," Piko said, nodding towards the blonde girl in Rin's homeroom. "She's in my year; we have English together,"
Rin nodded, not really paying attention to what they were saying. She was watching Miku, who had just thrown her beautiful head back in laughter, making the sun catch on her shiny hair.
Miku must have sensed someone staring at her, because she looked up and just for a second, met Rin's eyes before the latter looked away. Miku gave her a little wave that Rin tried to return, but it came out an awkward salute-like gesture.
Len and Fukase immediatly burst into very, very loud laughter. "What was that? Did you just join the army with her?" Len asked, wheezing.
Rin could feel her face turning red with a mixture of anger and embarassment. "I'm going to go put my things away in my locker," she said, grabbing her bag and storming back into the school.
