"Your car is nice," Rin attempted to compliment awkwardly as Miku pulled out of the driveway.
"Thanks!" Miku said. "So, how's school really going for you?"
"Hm?" Rin said, not fully understanding what she meant.
"Well, I can tell you don't really want to be there. But then again, who does?" Miku said. "Anything on your mind?"
Rin shrugged. "I don't know,"
Miku nodded. "If you ever want to talk, I'm here."
"Thanks," Rin said. "I'm just... not really used to hanging out with people. Other than my brother, and his friends."
"Oh, were my friends being too much?" Miku said, her tone worried. "I'm sorry, I know they're pretty loud,"
"No, no," Rin said. "It's not that. I just... stuff happened at school last year. I don't really do friends anymore."
Silence followed this statement. Rin mentally kicked herself. There, she had done it again, telling someone she barely knew too much. Why was she even talking about it with Miku? She didn't like talking about it with anyone. Not even her brother, or people she'd known since she was little. So why did it feel so easy to open up to this girl she barely known for a day?
"I'm really sorry about... whatever happened," Miku said. She sounded very sorry indeed; maybe almost on the brink of tears? Rin couldn't figure out why. "I know what that's like,"
Rin looked over at Miku, who's eyes were fixed on the road. "You decided to do friends again, though?" she asked quietly.
Miku half-shrugged. "I don't know." They stopped at a red light, and Miku looked over at Rin with a little smile; whatever tears Rin had heard weren't there anymore. "You might just make me want to try friends again though, Rin. For real,"
Rin smiled and blushed. "Yeah... you too."
"Wow, that got weirdly deep for a few minutes," Miku said, and the girls laughed. "Thank you, Rin,"
"For what?" Rin asked.
"I guess, hanging out with me?" Miku replied.
"I should be the one thanking you for that," Rin muttered. "I'm... I'm glad we met,"
"Me too," Miku agreed. "I have a good feeling about you, Rinny,"
"Rinny?" Rin asked, blushing like crazy. The only person who had ever given her a nickname was her brother.
"Yeah! Isn't it cute?" Miku said, grinning at her.
"Yeah... it is," Rin said. Just now, she had felt so warm when Miku used the new nickname. She settled back into her seat, thinking about what that meant.

"You hung out with Miku again? And then she drove you home?" Len practically screamed. He had just gotten home from Fukase's half an hour after Rin had come back from Miku's.
"Yes, that's what I said," Rin said.
"Bro, you're so lucky! Do you think she's hot?" Len asked.
Rin went red. "What? That's- that doesn't matter,"
"Of course it does!" Len said, rolling his eyes. "The most popular, beautiful girl in the school not only went out of her way to invite you to her house, but then drove you home afterwards! Plus, it's obvious you feel something for her..."
"I'm just happy, okay? It's nice to be included," Rin said. "Anyways, if what I'm doing with Miku is 'flirting', you and Fukase must be a whole married couple-"
"I'm going to get chips," Len said, getting up quickly. "You like Miku!" he called from the kitchen in a sing-song voice.
"You're a dick!" Rin called back in the same tone.

"So, how was the first day back at school?" Rin and Len's mother, Meiko, asked.
Rin shrugged. "Fine," she didn't feel any particular need to discuss the details.
"Rin made a friend!" Len shouted. Rin silently cursed him.
"Oh, Rin-Rin, is that true?" Their father, Kaito, said excitedly.
"Maybe," Rin said, glaring at Len. "It's not important."
"Of course it's important!" Meiko said happily. "I'm so glad you're making friends with people your own age!"
Rin nodded, prodding her crepe (Len's favorite; Meiko had made it as a back-to-school treat) with her fork. "Yeah, I guess,"
"Me and Fukase are in the same homeroom," Len said. He was already on his third crepe. "And Oliver finally started High School,"
"Oh, that's right!" Meiko said. "How's he doing?"
"He cried cause Piko and I said we couldn't come to homeroom with him," Len said. "Thanks, dad," he added as Kaito tipped another crepe onto his plate. He took at big bite, and with his mouth full, said, "and I'm doing science first thing in the morning right after homeroom, which sucks-"
"Chew first, talk second," Meiko reminded him.
Len rolled his eyes, but swallowed his mouthful of food before continuing. "Which sucks because my homeroom is three floors away from the science lab,"
"My, my, the struggles," Meiko said, smiling. "How about you, Rin? What class do you have after homeroom?"
"Math," Rin said unhappily.
"Oh, I'm sorry, sweetheart," Meiko said.
"That's fine. I have to do it at some point," Rin pointed out.
"That's a good perspective," Meiko agreed.
"Alright, who wants more crepes?" Kaito called from the kitchen.
"ME!" Len yelled eagerly.
"Fine, but that's it! Five is enough, Len!" Kaito said.
Len punched the air. "Yes!"

Rin was lying in bed in her pyjamas, scrolling through Pinterest when an Instagram notification came through. She had almost forgotten that she had downloaded it earlier that day. Curious, she clicked on the notification.
DM request: mikuus_world would like to message you!
Heart beating fast, Rin quickly hit the accept button and opened the message.
Miku: hiya rinny, thnx for hanging out with me today!! would u want to come over again sometime this week???

Rin was now more excited for homeroom than she could remember being for any class ever. She was going to hang out with Miku on Friday! And Miku had been the one to reach out to her! She put her phone down on her bedside table, and, exhausted from all the day's excitements, fell asleep almost right away.
