WARING: MENTIONS OF BODY DYSMORPHIA
The mirror is not a friend,
It tells lies, twisted and broken.
It makes the lines deeper,
Imperfections bigger.
It fills in the gaps
With deceit and hatred.
It fools our eyes,
Telling us we're ugly,
It spills lies with his sharp tongue,
Making us believe he's right
And others lie.
It tells us to shed some weight,
Even when we can't afford it.
We're wrapped around his finger.
But some, some see his lies.
The mirror becomes their enemy,
And others are right.
They smile and don't care,
For they know,
That the mirror is not a friend.
I wrote this after reading "Perfect" by Ellen Hopkins, a book that a recommend for those who can handle talks of self harm. Like most, I have always struggled with self love and wrote this to remind myself that the mirror can be wrong.
