Chapter Seven
Ayato loses the cunning smile when Thoma looks away, saying: "Can we just forget the whole night, sir? I'm sorry but can we not talk about this again?" and glances back at Ayato, as if he just couldn't look at the young Master's eyes without thinking about it, while talking about it. Then Ayato would take a moment to respond, not with a word, but with a nod of his head.
What does he feel about it? Thoma asks himself. He left after that awkward silence, he wished he just left earlier and never talked to Ayato — feeling regret in their relationship that was just building up but is starting to slowly crumble. If it weren't for that night, they would still be very great friends or acquaintances who didn't have weird interactions, or maybe this wouldn't be difficult if Thoma had reacted differently, or maybe, maybe, maybe, hundreds of maybe. Thoma would think of reasons not to blame the Commissioner for the current stiffness of their relationship.
Inevitably, Thoma's days would continue in the Estate. With the same exact routines and back to not seeing Ayato as much again. He doesn't know what to think of him, and he doesn't even know if he wishes to see him again. If he hears and feels that he's in his office, he would quickly finish his work with no sounds inside, and leave for other errands that would pull him away from the young Master.
In the early morning, he woke up and took a bit of silence before moving and tying his blonde hair up. The breeze of Inazuma would chill him, but not as much as from Mondstadt. He would walk towards the Kamisato Estate after washing up, playing with his dog tag. He didn't have any plans for cleaning, then eyes the greenery around the Estate, thinking of cutting the grasses and plants neatly but unexpectedly he hears loud clacking sounds. He looks around the land and catches Kamisato Ayato wearing the same black kimono from before, wielding his great sword on a dummy with no thoughts, his moves were not thoughtful, as if Ayato's mind was somewhere else but not on his moves and sword.
Thoma holds his breath for unknown reasons. He starts walking away as he didn't want to attract Ayato's attention however as he steps away, the dog tag hanging around his neck loosens up—possibly from Thoma playing with it frequently—and slowly falls from his body, making a sound of steel clashing to the stone steps.
The first instinct Thoma had was to look at Ayato, who was already looking at him with his wooden sword in his hand. He avoids eye contact and bends down to take his stupid dog tag. He embarrassedly starts walking away, thinking he could get away from the Commissioner but he hears him say: "Thoma, come here."
For the first time, Thoma didn't want to follow. He turned to Ayato and just smiled, waved, and walked away which almost looked like a run. He quickly heads to the Headquarters, gasping for air that he didn't breathe in for a while because of Ayato. He groans and fixes himself, acting normal.
"Thoma."
He almost shrieked at the sudden call of Ayato because he followed him into the Headquarters, but Thoma contained himself and just took a deep vocal breath and even closed his eyes.
