"Mum, I promise I'll call you any chance I get and I'll try to visit as much as I possibly can. I'm going to be fine, my roommate should be here soon but I promise you I'll be fine." I hugged my Mum to reassure her that I was going to be fine and she had nothing to worry about.
I had just moved into my dorm room before uni started next week and my Mum, Anne, was not ready to leave me as now she wouldn't have either Gemma or myself at home.
"I know honey, I just worry about you but I'm also so excited for this next chapter of your life." She mumbles into my ear as she pulls away from my embrace, now standing at arms length as she squeezes my biceps gently.
"I should probably get going though, I'm meant to be meeting up with some work friends tonight for some drinks." She says as we start making our way down the stairs and back towards her car. I could hear the slight waver in her voice and knew she was trying to hold back tears.
Once we reach the car I turn her around to face me and sure enough there were some tears glistening in her eyes threatening to spill over at any second.
"Mum, I promise it's ok and that I'm going to be ok. I'll call and text you when I can and I'll keep you updated on what's happening in my life and I'll try and come home whenever I can or when I'm on break. Please try not to worry too much." I try to reassure her, knowing that nothing I really say could help in this moment but I need her to know that I will be ok and that she has nothing to worry about.
"I know H, but it's a mothers job to worry. I'm so excited for you and so proud of everything you've achieved so far but as your mother it's also scary to watch you leave home. I just want the best for you." She smiles, looking up at me squeezing my cheeks slightly causing me to roll my eyes playfully.
"Mum, really." I huff, slightly chuckling while she gives me another smile, eyes still filled to the brim with tears. If I stand here any longer it's only going to make this harder for the both of us.
"Ok Mum, as much as I don't want to force you to go the longer we stand here the harder it's going to be for you to leave." I chuckle, trying not to sound like I was forcing her to leave.
"Ok my baby boy. I love you so much, study hard and have fun. And don't forget about calling and texting me and don't forget to call your sister sometimes as well. I know with you both at uni now it's going to be harder to stay in contact but just make sure you two still call or text each other when you can." She says sternly, pointing her finger at me. I laugh as I draw her in for another hug, squeezing her tightly to me and reassuring her that I will in fact keep in contact with both her and Gemma.
"I love you too Mum." I mumble into her hair, planting a kiss on the top of her head before she's pulling away and getting into the car. I stand there and wave to her as she backs out of the car park and starts her journey back home.
I make my way back up to my little dorm and realize that my roommate still isn't here so I go to my room and start unpacking some of my belongings hoping that my roommate doesn't mind the fact that I chose my room without him being here.
~~~
It was roughly two hours later and I had nearly unpacked all my things when I hear the front door opening and closing. I decide that I should probably go out and greet whoever it is as it's probably my roommate and I don't want to get on their bad side on day one. I'm just hoping they're someone cool and someone I'll get along with easily.
"Uh, hi." I nervously greet as I stand in the doorway of the kitchen. He spins around to face me and I take in his blue eyes his blonde hair that has obviously been died. He's also slightly shorter than me and I'm shocked yet again when he starts to speak.
"Oh hey man. Gonna take a random guess and say that you're my roommate." He says in a thick Irish accent which takes me back.
"Um. Yeah, I'm Harry." I put my hand out for him to shake it. He steps closer to me so he can reach his hand out and shake mine.
"Nice to meet ya Harry, I'm Niall." He chuckles, looking at me up and down. I pull my hand away from his and look back at him before speaking again.
"Uh, so I kinda chose my bedroom already but if you aren't happy with yours then I'm more than happy to swap. I was going to wait for you but I honestly thought you would've been here earlier." I confess, hoping that it's not a big deal and he'll be happy with the room he's got, they're basically the same anyway.
"Nah man, all good. I'm honestly happy as long as I have a bed to sleep in." He smiles as he makes his way out of the kitchen and down the hallway as I point out his room to him. He thanks me and goes into his room and starts unpacking.
Our rooms are directly opposite each other's so when his door is open I can see everything he's doing and vice versa.
~~~
"Hey man, I'm starving. Wanna order pizza and watch a movie or something?" Niall says, walking out of his room and standing in my doorway with his phone in his hand.
"Let me know what you want. Ok happy to order it." He adds on, typing away on his phone.
"Yeah, sounds good to me. I'm pretty hungry myself." I answer, getting up off my bed and making my way to the lounge room. "I'm happy with a supreme please, I'll transfer you the money just let me know how much it is." I say, as we walk down the hallway together and into the lounge room, settling down and turning on the TV.
When the pizza arrives we put on 'Fast and Furious' and settle in, both eating our pizza in silence. Before I get too engrossed in the movie I quickly text my Mum to let her know that both myself and my roommate, Niall, were settled in and that he seems like a pretty cool guy and could possibly become a friend.
I then turn off my phone for the night and let myself get lost in the movie.
