On October 31, we went to school normally and after school, we grew our horns and went to parties. At each party, people asked us if our horns were real, and we said no. They asked to try them on and we said that we had gotten surgery to have them permanently because we were ‘rebelling’ for the demon Childs that had their freedom stolen from them. After that speech, we left laughing at the sight of their faces. Demons obviously weren’t a subject of conversation in their world and they obviously scared the hell out of them. At the parties that had microphones, we’d scream "Demons shall rule!" to gain attention and the same thing when we left. We had an amazing time. We would laugh nonstop at the reactions we got from our faking.
At midnight, we were back at Jayke’s place because we had some November 1 stuff to plan. Our plans were put aside when we came in. Jayke’s father – who had been going around the world meeting other demons to one day actually start a rebellion, he had been working on this since Jayke’s birth when he found out he was going to have a demon child – was spread on the couch with his mother kneeling beside the couch crying softly. Mr. Shann didn’t seem as strong as I had expected. When we finally got in front of him, we saw why his blood call was weak; Mr. Shann’s horns had been removed. He looked up to Jayke and smiled then looked down to our hands and just plain stared.
"My, you grew. Last time I saw you, you were just an alien in the TV." He laughed softly and took his eyes off our hands.
"You never called, or asked to see a picture of your only son. You ran off leaving mom alone. She was too young to have a kid among her kind and you knew that. You left and she was kicked out of her world," he spoke the words with anger and pulled me closer.
"I sent her money to buy this house and I left to work on assuring your safety, doesn’t that count?" Mr. Shann whispered, stroking Miranda’s cheek. She looked like a pet slave with him there.
Remember the latest teleportation method we worked on? Jayke asked me quietly while keeping his eyes on his parents.
The one where inside five seconds I had to have sensed, teleported and summoned? I answered with a question, keeping my eyes on his parents too.
Yeah. I want you to count to one hundred and do it. He told me.
"One, two, three …" Mr. Shann stared at us counting. I saw and sensed the surprise in Jayke as he tensed against me. "Jayke, my personal ability is reading mind talk. Why do you want to run away?"
"To show you that I can protect mom better then you ever could," Jayke replied sounding challenged.
"But you need that girl, she leaves and you and your mom and defenseless and inoffensive." He stood and suddenly I found my back pressed against Mr. Shann’s chest with one of his hands holding a knife to my throat. Although that had surprised me and I was scared for my life, I continued counting. (Twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four …). Jayke stared in amazement knowing his father was right. My strong blood was their only protection. (Thirty …).
"Leave her alone, she did nothing wrong," Jayke said.
"She did nothing wrong? But, isn’t this Crissy Tane?" He brought the knife to my cheek and brushed the tip across, pressing gently. (Thirty-nine, forty, forty-one …). "She killed a man and ran away," he turned his eyes from me and looked directly at Jayke who was now holding his mother. "Seventeen years ago I was given an offer. A good job and life, death or life as a slave. I took a good job and life and had my horns removed. I started working for the government that day I left. Recently, they asked me to find a girl who had passed her tests at birth by the use of her skills. I was told her name was Christine Shelvy, but no school or town had her as a registered sixteen year old. Then, we found Mr. Shelvy dead and went to his wife, Mrs. Tane who claimed that her daughter, Crissy Tane, had killed her husband but she had no pictures of her," (Seventy-two, seventy-three, seventy-four …). "I looked for the schools and finally found her hanging out with Jayke Shann. My son had befriended a criminal. I followed you two for a few weeks and was amazed to see that you two lived together in MY home. Crissy Tane must either die, or come with me," he looked down at me, "and your choice will be?"
(Eighty-six, eighty-seven, eighty-eight, eighty-nine, ninety …).
"I’ll take option number three. Life, freedom and I’ll take Jayke and Miranda with me. Sorry Mr. Shann, I can’t let you do this. One hundred." And with that I closed my eyes and reached out to Jayke and his mom with my mind and tried teleporting. I failed.
Mr. Shann looked around, surprised and angry. We hadn’t teleported, the mirror in front of us said that I had made us invisible. He screamed and summoned someone to help him.
"Search the upper floor, tear everything apart if you need to, but find them!" He yelled.
I saw the look on Jayke and his mom, they were in awe at my new skill. I guess being on my birthday really made me that much stronger. I spoke, I wanted to know if our voices were drowned out too.
"Jayke, Miranda, are you both alright?" Mr. Shann never looked around as if hearing voices, instead he left the room searching for us but I kept my eyes on his choice of room exit. He knew we were somewhere in the house, he could feel our blood call.
"Yeah, we’re fine," answered Miranda a bit bewildered.
"Miranda, could you mask our aura and blood call? He knows we’re in the house just not where." Jayke walked over to me and took hold of me by the shoulders, just looking into my eyes. His own red Fee eyes shined with a thank you he couldn’t express. I hugged him tight seeing that our aura had been masked as both men left. The mirror we had been standing in front of slowly started to regain images of who we were and Jayke resumed his glamour that I hated ever since I had seen his real eyes.
"You two won’t be safe with me around, they’re after me, I know they’ll go to my mom now, I should pay her a visit. I’ll come back when its safe." I said with an ounce of sadness. My birthday wasn’t turning out as fun as it had been planned to be.
"You’re not going anywhere without me," Jayke said laying a kiss on his mom’s cheek and then on my lips. "Mom, go back to your family, he won’t hurt you there. Tell them I’m dead if you need to. We’ll come back to you soon." She gave me a smile with a little, take care my little demons, as Jayke took my hand and we disappeared, reappearing at my mom’s place.
