She was sitting on the couch watching t. v. I stood in front of the tube and closed it. She just stared at my bleeding cheek. The knife had pierced my cheek a bit and some blood was starting to leak. She got up an came back with the first aid kit. Without a word I sat on the couch near her and let her clean the small cut. Jayke stood nearby, watching her every move.
“I never wanted you to have these problems,” she whispered, “I wanted you to have a better life then I had. I wanted you to have a normal life. I had to run, hide, escape and run more until I gave up and just made a pact with the devil to have a safe life in exchange for the child I was bearing.”
“Christine Shelvy,” I whispered and she nodded.
“Your birth name, the child I gave away… or so they think I did.” She got up and took a box from the book shelf and handed it over to me. “Birth and death certificate of Christine Shelvy the demon. Birth certificate of my second child, human this time, Crissy Tane. Baby pictures too, in case you wanted to know what you were like. Your father never wanted me to show you these pictures.” I stared at the documents and pictures along with the one that said I was human. It was signed by Miranda Shann, I showed it to Jayke and he didn’t seem surprised to learn that his mom had faked my birth, name, race, everything.
“Who did you want me to be, Christine Shelvy the demon or Crissy Tane the human?” I asked her.
She looked at me, then at Jayke and back at me.
“I wanted you to be Crissy Tane the demon child.” She whispered, almost ashamed.
“That’s who I am, and you knew that, so why did you tell on me?” I asked with some anger showing.
“I had to. As I said, I made a pact with the devil. That being your father. He worked for the government and his employers knew everything about me. I couldn’t just not say anything. I told but I hoped to dear god that you’d be as strong as I thought you were.”
“Crissy is stronger then any demon child has been in the centuries that we have been. She can teleport with no problem, summon easily, sense at large distances and now, she can make herself and others invisible with the touch of her mind. Don’t put her to waste.” Jayke said as he walked closer taking my hand. He was telling my mom but looking straight into my eyes. My mother stared at me, she was amazed, obviously.
“Mom, will you let me leave and put your life at risk for my safety?” I asked taking her hands. I hadn’t said it but they were nearby.
“I will, only if you promise not to show how strong you really are even if you get caught.” She smiled, squeezing my hand. She knew I’d leave and perhaps never see her again.
“I promise,” I squeezed her hand and gave her a kiss on the cheek. The minute I was at Jayke’s side, there was a banging on the front door. My mother seemed taken by panic but went to open the door with us in plain sight of whoever was there. She was already betraying her promise except that, the minute the door opened on the men, Jayke and I were no where to be seen.
Keep your promise, mother. My life relies on you. I sent those words to her mind before being too far away. Hawaii seemed like a nice destination at the moment, but we wouldn’t run like that.
We appeared in the school where Jayke changed both out appearance. Instead of my black hair and medium tan, I had wavy red hair with very pale skin and light blue eyes rather then my forest green eyes, he also gave me freckles which I thought made me look like a doll. I still looked somewhat like myself but not enough to be discovered. Jayke turned his brown hair to a dark blond and his red/brown eyes to green. His strong soccer player build went down to a plain skinny guy body. As for me, he resembled himself but not enough to be discovered. Our only problem now was what we were homeless. We filled out the papers to drop out of school, changed our names to Lexsley Carmain for me and Kaive Gothfraid for him, we applied for jobs and got an apartment. Mr. Shann wouldn’t expect us to stay in town, dropping out of school would give him even more reason to believe we had left town. Our appearance was changed, our aura’s we re hidden, Jayke’s mom was safe, mine was under a death promise and we’d stay where no one would expect us to: in town, until the time came that we really had to run.
We continued playing Lexsley and Kaive. We passed Christmas together doing things normal humans did except that we mind talked our real names to make sure we never forgot where we came from, who we were and why we were faking. Although we were fighting to forget this hell, we didn’t want to turn into fake humans or turn as pitiful as my mother had. Neither were we going to give up our horns like our fathers had.
After the second month I was already worried about my mother. I secretly hoped she had betrayed us since she didn’t have any info that would harm us anyhow. I spent an hour per night looking at my baby pictures and soon saw that the man with my mom on each picture was never the man I had killed. Perhaps he was Christine Shelvy’s dad, thus mine. If that was so, he had in his mind a dead daughter since age two and that the mother had remarried and adopted a two year old. On each picture, I had my horns and on each, my mother looked so happy compared to when she was with my father, if he really was. I decided I had to find that man.
“Kaive, how hard do you think it is to find a man that all you know is what he looks like?” I asked Jayke handing him the picture where we saw most of him.
“Depends, usually pretty easy but considering our situation,” he thought for a moment, “I guess there would be a way. We can go to Mrs. Tane claiming we found this picture and that he looks like our father whom we lost sight of years ago. She’ll probably give us a name.”
We waited on my mom’s footsteps for an hour or so before she finally arrived. I had my fake tears on and she willingly gave us his name and address never once seeming to suspect us of anything at all.
