Noelle Lochheart was once hopeful enough to believe that the Hunger Games could never touch her, that being a good person gained her a touch of luck in the eyes of fate, that if she closed her eyes and prayed each and every night to whatever blind God there existed that she would not be chosen. All it took was the very first syllable ─ even the shape of her name in Circe Chimera's mouth ─ for Noelle to understand that there was no such fortune waiting in the wings for her. The house always won, and there was no less merciful house than the Capitol.
It wasn't as though she expected any volunteers: she was seventeen years old, had performed exceptionally well at the training academy all those years ago, and was generally known to be a wise girl with the skill to prove it. It would be a pity to watch her go, of course, but better her than them. Whilst nobody in District 4 expected a victory, practically everybody understood that Noelle Lochheart would fight until her final breath, go down swinging.
She wasn't delusional. There was no chance in Hell that she could win using her intellect alone, although she would much sooner take the easy way out before even hitting the Tribute Center steps than have somebody as arrogant as Finnick Odair as her mentor in physical training. She had heard all of the rumours about their district's dazzling spectacle and his charming habit of breaking hearts wherever he went ─ she had even admired him once, many moons before she had the devastating misfortune of holding a conversation with the guy.
Nineteen-year-old Finnick was selfish, brusque, horrifically cocky, and every other insult under the sun that Noelle could spit out between grit teeth. He had no belief in her whatsoever; she was just another pretty face, a dainty little thing with cloudy dreams and a tragically early grave. They would eat her alive, he said.
But Finnick had started a fire, bright and burning, and Noelle was more than ready to play.
