when the music clicked on, and people made their way onto the makeshift dance floor. the last thing crowley had been expecting was to be dragged into the crowd by aziraphale. the angel had latched onto his wrist and tugged him through the swarm. the way aziraphale asked stuck in his mind like a slick coat of honey.
the goofy smile that brightened up the room, his sparkling eyes that boiled over with excitement. in all honesty, crowley hated dancing. not because he wasn't good at it, he just never got the chance to pick up on the skill.
so when aziraphale asked him to dance too many doubts flooded his mind. what if he messed up? the angel extended his hand and the demon graciously took it. aziraphale's hands were soft, delicate like the soft untouched skin of a baby.
"are you ready?" he asked with a beaming smile. still unsure, crowley nodded his response. "i think so.."
sure, he had seen the dance performed a few centuries ago; but the steps were fuzzy. "i've never done this before.." he whispered, the last song died down and the couples got in position for the next song to begin.
"just follow my lead," aziraphale says reassuringly. their eyes locked and a woosh of confidence brushed over crowley. he started a bit shaky; tripping up a couple times. but after a minute or so he got the hang of it. dancing like the room wasn't full of strangers judging his every mess up.
and frankly, he didn't care that there were other people's eyes following his every step. because right now all that mattered was aziraphale. their eyes never broke, his dashing yellow following where ever the angel's hazelnut went.
even when they broke to twirl more than a couple times, they would always find each other again. like they were meant to be together; locked in an endless cycle. he was certain aziraphale could feel it too.
when they neared the end of the symphony, and crowley was dripped. there came a spark, their eyes still focused on one another. time came to a sudden stop. everything seemed to be gone, and all that was left over was aziraphale. at that moment nothing mattered. not the people, not the bookshop. all that mattered was the cheery angel in front of him.
so it took everyone (including him) by surprise when he leaned upwards and placed a peck on aziraphale's lips. the kiss lasted under a second, it was quick enough that aziraphale questioned if it even happened. he watched as crowley stormed out of the bookshop.
confused, aziraphale placed his fingers on his lips. feeling the lingering kiss engraved into them. why would crowley kiss him out of nowhere? he wondered. the only way he would get any answers would be to ask crowley himself. so he followed the trail outside. opening the doors only to see the demon sitting on a bench a few doors down from his bookshop.
"if you came out here to badger me, don't bother." crowley said in an irritated tone. aziraphale's steps hindered. "that's not why i came out here crowley."
he sat down next to the angered demon. upon seeing the angel, he shamefully hid his face in his hands. it's not every day that someone kisses their best friend. there was no explanation that would justify the kiss. nothing that he could say to avoid it either.
"you hate me, don't you?" his words were muffled, but aziraphale was able to make out what he said.
"why would you think such a thing!?" the angel affirmed. "i could never hate you crowley." he placed his hands on the demons and gently pried his hands from his face. their fingers intertwined and for a moment crowley thought he must've been dreaming.
"i love you,"
he said with a soft smile. the softness of their lips rested against one another. they shared a second kiss on the bench, feelings floating out in the open for all to see. once the kiss broke crowley whispered a sweet,
"i love you too, angel."
