Its finally Friday. Date night. I just got home from school and went to lay in my bed. I look at the clock after an hour of just laying in bed looking at the ceiling tinking. 4:00 p.m. I roll out of bed and shower then walk to my closet. After chewing on my lip for a minute I go with black skinny jeans, a gray and white sweater, and black combat boots. I go into the bathroom and brush my teeth and brush my hair.
I look back at the time and see it's 5:30 p.m. After I'm done messing with my hair I go downstairs and into the kitchen. I am just about to move my wolf books, that haven't left the table since my break down two months ago, when something catches my eye. Paw prints in the light snow by the door, leading into the heavy snow past the porch. I study them for a minute and then next thing I know I'm grabbing my coat and heading outside. I follows the paw prints to the edge of the woods. Before thinking to much about it, I walk into the woods following the paw prints. I reach a fallen tree, and on the other side is a clearing.
1..2..3. I count in my head, breath out a puff of fogged breath, and step over the fallen tree. I walk to the middle of the clearing. In the distance I hear a few rumbling. I quickly check the time on my phone, 5:55 p.m.
"Crap! Declan!" I say remembering my date. I turn and start running back towards the fallen tree, but when I was just about to reach it, the large black green eyed wolf jumps over it. Causing me to stumble backwards and landing on my back. It bares its teeth at me. I scramble backwards a little before it growl loudly and snarls more. I freeze in place. It steps closer to me. I sit up slowly and stare it in the eyes. It continues to growl lowly and holds its ground.
After a minute of thinking, I suck in a breath of air and start to slowly reach my right hand up. I extend my arm out slowly until its straight out. My hand is inches away from the snarling wolf. I can feel the warmth of its breathing on my palm. I close my eyes and turn my head down. Waiting for it to snap at me. There's a ghostly growl and then the warmth on my hand is gone. When I opened my eyes again, the wolf was gone. Frantically I look for any sign of the wolf, but it was nowhere to be found. I quickly get up on my feet and whip around. Nothing. I'm not sure, why I waited or what I was waiting for, but for some reason I couldn't force myself to walk away.
"Emma?" A manly voice says through the trees.
I turn around and see Declan standing by the fallen tree, in all black.
"What are you doing out here?" He asks raising his eyebrows.
"Um, I was just.. There was.. I don't know exactly, uh how'd you know I was out here?" I finally spit out after trippig over my own words.
"I knocked on your door and you didn't answer, so I followed your foot prints out here to make sure you were okay," Declan explains.
"Oh right, um sorry," I nervously smile.
"You okay?" He asks puzzled.
"Yeah, fine."
"Well, you ready for our date?"
"Lead the way," I couldn't believe he still wanted to go on a date. Most people would have assumed they were stood up and left. Not followed footprints into the woods and then still gone on the date when they found their date standing in the woods. He was different, in a good way.
At the skating rink, I fell four times and Declan laughed and helped me up. Then let me hold onto his arm while we skated around. After three hours of ice skating, we went to the diner in town.
"What would you like yo drink?" The perky blonde waitress asks us smiling.
"Um, water for me is fine thank you," I say awkwardly.
"I'll have a sprite," Declan says.
"I'll be right back with your drinks," the blonde waitress smiles and disappears into the kitchen.
"So do you live in that house by yourself?" Declan cluelessly asks.
"Yeah, I mean a friend of the family comes and checks on me every so often, but I live there alone," I reply.
"Where's your parents?"
I stare at him for a moment, confused about how he doesn't know.
"Well, my dad died a few years ago, and my mom...." I take a breath and continue,"she's... She's gone too, I'm confused how didn't you know about my mom? It was on the news and there was a funeral that half the town came too, I thought I saw you there?" I ask confused and concerned.
"I must have been out of town, I wasn't at any funeral, and I'm sorry to bring it up," he answers genuinely sorry... I think.
"Here you go," the waitress chirps handing us our drinks,"are you ready to order?"
"Yaa, I'll have a club sandwich please," Declan smiles.
"I'll have the same," I reply.
"I'll have them right out," the waitress says taking our menues and disappearing into the kitchen once again.
Declan and I talk and then eat and talk more. Before we realized it, the diner was empty and it was an hour from closing. We decide to call it a night and head to his car.
On the way home, he had his phone plugged into the aux cord in the stereo with Pandora streaming. We continued talking, about anything. About cars, poetry, school, and music. Whatever came up. Time flew by, and then we were in front of my house. Declan turned off the car and walked me to my door.
"I had fun tonight," I say smiling a genuine smile. The first genuine smile since my mom died.
"I did too, hopefully you'll have fun on the next one," Declan smiles.
"Next one?" I raise my brow, still smiling.
"That is if you agree?"
"Hmm I suppose," I say in a playful tone.
I wait a second and then say,"well.. Goodnight, thank you for dinner and everything." I start to turn to my door when Declan grabs my hand and pulls me back around. He leans in so close, I feel his breath on my lips. Without thinking, I moved slightly and kissed his cheek.
"Goodnight," I almost whisper, then go inside. I wiggle my fingers, saying bye, to him through the sliding glass doors and smirk. He laughs and waves bye then heads back to his car.
