Declan

As I read my mothers journal, I uncovered so many secrets. Secrets that the world must not learn. I decided to take all of her journals and hide them away. I knew I had to hurry, if I was gone to long Emma would begin to worry. I had to keep reading the journal though, I needed to know what the scent was. I ran to the basement of my house and removed a loose brick in the wine cellar. There was a secret space there, where I kept things that weren't meant to be found. I stashed all the journals other than the one I was reading, then darted back upstairs and to my room. I quickly made an overnight bag and head downstairs. My phone buzzed in my pocket. Emma.

Oh my goodness, you're so slow! Haha hurry back, I'm getting sleepy(:

I felt myself smiling and shoved my phone back in my pocket. Once I was back at Emma's, I quietly went inside. The only light on was a lamp in the living room. I turned it off and snuck up to Emma's room. I was about to turn the handle, when there was an odd scent. I froze. I knew that scent all to well. Blood. I flung Emma's door open. She was at the end of her bed with her knees pulled in, face buried in them, and arms wrapped around herself.

"Emma?..." I wasn't sure what to think. I heard her muffled sobs. I looked around at the blood. It was smeared on the wall under the window and splattered on the floor. I don't understand what I am seeing.

"Emma, what happened? Are you okay?" I tried to get her to speak, to explain. She wouldn't move. She wouldn't say anything. She just quietly sobbed. I sighed and turned around to get cleaning supplies from downstairs.

"I killed it..." Emma said softly.

"Killed..what?" I was puzzled. I saw no carcass anywhere. All I saw was blood.

"The deer.. outside. I was looking out my window, and this deer was walking by. I got this strange feeling inside. I watched it walk slowly into the yard. Then I leaped through the window and shifted and attacked it. I ate from it and.." she stopped. I couldn't tell if she was afraid to keep going or ashamed. She started crying a little more, then took a deep breath and continued," I..drank the blood..then I jumped back through the window. I shook the blood from my fur, like it was water. Then I shifted back."

I didn't know what to say to her. I walked over to her, and sat down beside her. She never lifted her face. I wrapped my arms around her and kissed her head. I wanted to tell her it would be okay, that everything is fine, but I couldn't. The truth is I had no idea if it really would be okay. I needed to do more research. I needed to read more of the journals my mother left.

"I'll clean it up...don't worry," I whispered to her, then gathered the cleaning materials and began cleaning the blood. Once it was done I stopped in the doorway and looked back at Emma. She looked scared and helpless, like a pup without a mother. I sighed,"Emma... I have to go. I am not sure when I will be back."

For the first time that night, she looked up with tearful eyes. "Please...don't leave."

"Emma, I'm sorry I don't want to but I need to," it killed me to see her like this. To hear her almost beg for me not to leave. I turned towards the door started to head to the stairs. I had just reached the top of the stairs, when I felt arms wrap around me. "Please don't go, I don't want to be alone," Emma pleaded.

I turned to face her. She loosened her arms enough to allow me to turn, but her arms didn't leave me. I pulled her close and hugged her tight. When I loosened my grip, she kept her face buried in my chest. I lifted her chin and pressed our lips together. I knew it would be the last kiss for a while. I hated knowing that. I let go of her, retrieved my bag from the end of the stairs, and headed to my car. When I got in my car, I looked up and saw Emma standing there at the end of her porch in the snow. Watching me leave. My heart began sinking in my chest. I wanted to get out and run to her. Though I knew I couldn't. I pulled my phone from my pocket and looked at the last message I had received on the way here.

I sighed, and pulled out of the driveway. I drove back to my house and packed for the trip ahead of me. I had to find out who it was on the other end of the text, and what it was they say I need.
