Sophie understood what everything meant. She now understood why the Neverseen wanted to kill her, why Lady Gisela had given Keefe a new ability, and why she had been created. But she didn't want to. It was all so terrifying, unrealistic, twisted. She ran before anything else could happen.

Chapter 1  "And I am the power source you're all here looking for." Everyone had their questions. Why, what, when. But the right question was: "How?" Elysian turned to her, folding her hands in front of her. "So, I finally get to meet the famous little moonlark. It's too bad her friends will witness her death soon." Keefe instantly stood in front of Sophie, and without hesitation, the others made a circle around her. "You stay away from her!" Keefe shouted, tightening his grip on her dagger, Hope. Both his mother and Elysian laughed, sending snakes of cold up Sophie's spine. "Or what?" Elysian asked. "I can beat all of you in a heartbeat, with just a wave of my hand." As if to prove her point, she waved her hand through the air, setting her hand on fire. And a second later, Marella grunted in pain and fell to the floor with a soft, THUD! "I haven't seen a Pyrokenitic in years. A shame she wasn't a fighter." Guys, go! I think Keefe is ready. Sophie transmitted, watching as Keefe stepped closer to Lady Gisela, his face paler than it had been before. In an instant, Maruca dropped the force-field, and Keefe ran at his mom. Which left Sophie with Elysian, who waved her hand through the air, but got nothing in return. "A fighter. Finally, a chance for some fun!" Sophie reached into her cape, pulled out some throwing stars, aimed for Elysian's head, and let them fly.

Chapter 2  Elysian caught the stars with her mind, making them hover inches from her head. "It's cute you think your tricks will work with me." Then she threw the stars back, and when Sophie dived to avoid them, one grazed her cheek. It felt like her veins were made of fire, but she got back up and risked a glance at Keefe. Lady Gisela had him pinned to the ground, holding his hands behind his back. He tried to struggle free, but only moved an inch. Sophie took out another throwing star, aimed for Lady Gisela, and threw it. She simply reared her head back, dodging it. But Sophie had lined it up to bounce off the wall, then hit her. And as the star stuck into her shoulder, she released her grip on Keefe, who got up instantly. Sophie was knocked to the ground, violently, and when she looked up, she saw Elysian standing over her, holding throwing stars with her mind. Sophie braced for the worst–but was surprised when Fitz himself tackled Elysian. Then she noticed Biana holding her hand out to Sophie, who took it and realized the rest of the gang were there, too. "You didn't think we would leave you behind like that, did you?" Dex asked, pulling a square silver gadget from his cape. "I did for a minute. But we've got to help Keefe and Fitz." Biana, Tam, Linh and Woltzer went to Keefe's side while Dex, Maruca, and Sophie charged after Elysian. At some point, Fitz had jumped off Elysian, but continued to fight her. And when he had to dodge flames, Maruca trapped her in a force-field. But, with a wave of Elysian's hand, the force-field fell, and so did Maruca. "Honestly, I thought you would've learned by now. But apparently, you need another lesson." "NO!" Sophie yelled, tackling Elysian. They rolled around on the ground, knocking Lady Gisela on her butt, and eventually began slapping and punching each other. "I didn't know Sophie had that in her." Fitz whispered, backing up. Sophie tapped into her anger and rage, focused on Elysian, and when the energy felt ready, she released it, sending a strike of red lightning at Elysian. Thankfully, it worked, and the cloaked figure thrashed and shook on the ground. Before she could go help Keefe and the others, something heavy and furry slammed into her, pinning her to the ground. But when she threw her leg out, she felt a connection as what had been pinning her ran away. Just like that, she was free. She turned around, finding her friends fighting Lady Gisela, and losing. Soon, everyone had some injury, and Keefe was pinned to the ground, with Glimmer–where had she even come from and how had she gotten here?–putting glowing bands of light on his wrists. Lady Gisela now had control of her son. And the first order she gave him was: "Restrain Sophie."
