Sophie didn't feel like going to Havenfield yet, and she didn't want to go back to Brumevale out of respect for Alvar, so...she went to the Shores of Solace, just sitting on the beach, staring at Alvar's pin. It was the same as Fitz's. Two golden, diamond encrusted wings on a gray background. She was thinking about how Alvar hadn't said anything about the trolls. Were they working with Elysian and Ruy? Were they not a threat to them? "Didn't think I'd find you here, Foster." She turned to look at Keefe as he sat next to her on the sand. "I guess I should tell you. Fitz hailed me and–" "Said Alvar's dead?" They finished together. "Wait, how do you know?" Keefe asked, then noticed the crest pin in her hands. "He found me at Brumevale. He knew Ruy and Elysian's plan all along." Keefe ran a hand through his hair. "What did he tell you?" Sophie let a small moment of silence pass before answering. "Remember that symbol I projected earlier?" He nodded and she opened the memory log. She flipped to the page where the three symbols made one huge one and showed it to Keefe. "You know how the Neverseen want to kill us. That's what the eye represents. You know they experimented on humans. That's what the star represents. And the new symbol, Alvar called it Elysian's mark, and said it tied everything together to make a plan worse than death. But it represents them taking over both worlds, killing every elf and human and ogre and goblin and dwarf unless proven useful." Then, just as Alvar had done with her, she looked at Keefe sadly. "We're useful to Elysian, Keefe. If they got hold of any of us, they would use us to kill every population."

Keefe wrapped an arm around Sophie, and she leaned her head on his shoulder, letting Keefe rest his head on hers. She tried to calm down, but the worry that coursed through her was strong. And the anger was even stronger. Why would Elysian want to kill every population except the trolls? What made Sophie and her friends that useful? What made them powerful enough to take out entire populations? A calming, green breeze flew through her mind, and she took a few deep breaths. "Sorry." She told Keefe. "I was just–" "Foster, you don't need to be sorry. Everyone's mad and worried right now." Did she mention how much she loved Keefe? "I just...wonder what makes us powerful enough to take out whole populations. Do the others have some type of power they don't know about? I mean, what makes us that useful to a villain?" She felt Keefe shrug. "I don't know and I don't want to find out. Wait–did I just say something Gigantor would say?" That's when Sophie noticed how quiet Sandor had been, not making any comments, like he usually does. She looked behind her–seeing Sandor's lifeless form lying on the sand and pulled out her dagger. Keefe pulled out some throwing stars and moved to Sophie's backside. Before she could blink, Keefe fell to the ground with a soft THUD! Sophie spun around, looking in every direction, and barely managed to block a dart with her dagger. But that didn't matter. Something pricked her arm, and the next thing she knew, she was falling into darkness.
