Sophie opened her eyes, but she could only see blurry shapes and fuzzy colors. She couldn't feel anything, either. And everything she heard was muffled. The yells, the grunts, the screams, the sound of metal on metal. And the sound of a voice calling her name. "Sophie? Sophie! Come back, please! Tell me you're ok!" But she wasn't in control of herself. It was like someone else was living in her mind, whispering in her ear, telling her what to do. Take them all out. She heard a shriek of pain next to her, realizing she had used Elysian's added abilities on someone. She stood, then went to the middle of the battlefield, and listened to the voice. Shock them. She used the energy around her–then stopped, her vision and hearing clear again. She was staring straight at Wylie and Dex, who were wrapped in a forcefield. Wylie caught her eye as she warned them. "I-I'm not in control–" Her vision went blurry again and her hearing was muffled. She used the energy around her, creating a storm of lightning, sparking in every direction. Someone knocked her to the ground, pinning her hands behind her back. "TAM!" Blow her away. The voice whispered. She let a gust of air escape her hands, blowing the weight off her. "Sophie, you have to stop!" She rolled away before they could pin her again. But she was swept off her feet by a wave of water. She formed a force-field around herself so she didn't drown. "It's Linh! Sophie, don't you remember?" She shot a blast of fire toward the voice. Then, everything came back again. She was staring at Grady now, who scrunched his eyebrows together, trying to control her. "You have to stop!" He yelled. "I'm n-not in control!" She yelled back, right before she lost it.

Chapter 33

Sophie didn't know which happened first. The way Fintan and Umber revealed themselves, or how they striked everyone down except Keefe. Bring him to me. She vanished, advancing on her target from behind, then jumping into the air, and shooting a beam of darkness toward him. He dodged it easily, then grabbed her hands, and flipped her over him, causing her to take control back. Keefe looked so hurt and worried and angry, standing above her, but he must've noticed some change. "Foster?" All she could do was nod, she was so exhausted and spent on energy. Then she yelped in pain. It felt like her skin was being pulled off her bones, exposing everything underneath. Keefe bent down to check on her–then doubled over in pain himself. A minute later, the feeling retreated, and she was standing, staring at Keefe in horror. He was covered in glowing black cracks, just like she had been, and his eyes... they were blood-red, reflecting flames from the battleground, where her friends and families lifeless forms laid. Then, his head snapped toward her, and he ran at her. Sophie understood what everything meant. She now understood why the Neverseen wanted to kill her, why Lady Gisela had given Keefe a new ability, and why she had been created. But she didn't want to. It was all so terrifying, unrealistic, twisted. She ran before anything else could happen.

Chapter 34

Sophie didn't stop running. Not until she found trees to climb and hide in. Was this really why the Black Swan had created her? This was the reason the Neverseen wanted to kill her? This was why Keefe's mother had given him a new ability? None of it made sense! She didn't understand one part of this reason! "Sophie, why are you hiding?" It was Fintan's voice. "I thought you'd be happy for a friendly reunion!" Then she heard crackling flames, realized what he was doing, and jumped out of the tree, rolling to absorb the impact. She was on her own now. Against three total elves. One of which came back from being dead, one of which somehow escaped his prison, and one who was being mind-controlled. "There you are!" She ducked to avoid another blast of fire, feeling the heat singe her hair. "Close one!" Fintan laughed. She side-stepped to avoid shadowflux, almost losing her balance, but recovering, and... "Woo!" Falling straight into a ditch. Luckily, she could continue running down the left path, making the other three follow her. "You can't run forever, girl!" She looked up in time to see Fintan shooting a blast of flames, but rolled to the right before it hit her. And ended up in a sphere of light. "No!" There was no way out of this one. She was trapped, out of energy to use any of her abilities, and all on her own. No one would come to rescue her. She caught a glimpse of Keefe–the real Keefe–looking at her, horrified. Then, he went back to being Elysian's little puppet as Fintan and Umber slid down the ditch, both smirking. "Do it, Keefe." He gave her his trademark smile, which Sophie would never look at the same way again, and filled the sphere of light with lightning, electrocuting Sophie as she groaned and yelped in pain.
