Chapter 43 - Comforting Words

*Grey's POV*

Murphy leads the me back up the pitch black staircase. As he pushes the roof top door open we're greeted with angry shouts of a heated argument. As we take in the scene unfolding before us, Tess bounds over looking worried.

Matt stands, red faced, before Baird who stands protectively in front of Evans. "Your no better than his is," Matt shouts. His hands clench into fists at his sides. "You could have saved her! But you didn't! You let her die!"

"Matt, there was nothing anyone could have done," Baird responds, keeping his voice calm and level. "She was crushed under the truck. The weight alone was enough kill any human.

"Evans could have stayed awake! Evans should learn how to do the goddamn jobs he's fucking assigned to do," Matt growls as he lunges toward Evans. Baird blocks his path and only to end up receiving a punch to the stomach. As he hunches over in pain Matt takes the opportunity to charge into a frightened Evans.

As the two men struggle with each other Murphy drops the suitcase and races over to break them up. Beside me Tess whimpers and hides behind me. Her small hands grab at mine.

"Hey," I say as I block her view of the fight. "It's ok. Matt, Baird, and Evans are just having a grown up tantrum.

Tess shakes her head, "No. Evans was apologizing for something to Matt and Matt got real angry, he was threatening to throw Evans off the roof. Baird saw them and stepped in and then you guys came back."

"It'll be alright," I tell her. Glancing over my shoulder I add, "Murphy and Baird will straighten them out."

As I comfort Tess I hear the men struggle behind me. Unable to restrain myself from looking I turn to face the fight. Murphy faces off with Matt as Baird tends to the fresh wounds on Evans.

The two men circle each other. Both are equally matched and hot-tempered. They glare at each other like two rabid dogs, ready to rip the others throat out.

In a split second Matt lunges toward Murphy, throwing a powerful punch. Seeing the attacking coming Murphy jumps out of the way and throws a punch of his own. His fist collides with Matt's jaw, putting him off balance. Not missing a beat Murphy throws in an uppercut which causes the unstable Matt to stumble backwards.

"SIT THE FUCK DOWN BEFORE I PUT YOU DOWN," Murphy commands as he stands ready.

Battered and defeated, Matt follows Murphy's order. Like an angry toddler he collapses down, glaring up at Murphy.

"Now, what the fuck is goin' on here?"

Awkwardly Baird clears his throat, "well, I didn't see everything but I know Matt was threatening to, feed Evans to the eaters."

"Why," Murphy asks while looking between the two men.

"I was only apologizing to him for what happened," Evans speaks up while rubbing the back of his head. "Then he freaked out. I didn't do anything wro--"

"Bullshit," Matt spits. "You were supposed to be checking the perimeter, not talking to me."

"I only wanted to clear the air between us."

"Shut the fuck up," Matt growls before standing and stalking off.

Frustrated Murphy stiffly rolls shoulders and lets out a breath. "Ya' good," he asks turning to Evans.

Nodding Evans picks himself off the ground, "I'll be fine."

"Alright," Murphy says, "We found some clothes 'n' some food." He makes his way back to the suitcase before adding, "take what ya' want, we'll find more food in the mornin'."
