Chapter 4 - Demons
*Murphy's POV*
We collapse on the ground panting after running for hours. Grey flops onto her back and I do the same. I look over at her and see her face go pale. Suddenly she sits up and spills her guts. I look away and smirk. I can't help it, I actually laugh. I haven't laughed since my sister turned and that was at least 11 months ago.
Grey flops back onto the ground and glares at me. "What's so funny," she says, her voice coming out sounding shaky.
I laugh again then say, "nothing. Just suppose your not hungry after that." Grey glares at me all the more. I just close my eyes and smirk.
The next thing I know I'm waking up on the ground, freezing cold. I must have passed out. Not good. Rule one, don't sleep in the open at night with no fire. For some reason, fire keeps the eaters away. I sit up and rub my arms, trying to bring some warmth back into them. I glance over at Grey and see her curled up in a ball snoring silently. I stand and look around for some dry branches. Gathering a few and put them in a pile. Next I go to my duffle bag and dig out a box of matches that I picked up at a house I scavenged.
Kneeling next to the pile of branches I light a match and drop it. The branches quickly take flame as I step back. Grey wakes as the warmth reaches her exposed skin. She rubs her eyes and stretches. I look at her and ask, "ya hungry now?"
She rubs her arms and says, "funny. Wait, are you serious?"
I smirk and go back to my duffle bag for the deer meat I got the other day. I pull out a hunk and show it to Grey. I can't help but crack up at her facial expression. It's a look of discussed and shock.
"What the hell is that," she says as she stands, still staring at the meat.
My smirk grows, "what, never seen deer before? Ya got a lot to learn princess."
Princess, did I just say that? Get it together Murphy. You meet one livin' person and you go soft! Soft ain't good Murphy. Being soft gets ya killed. I could just punch myself right now.
Grey walks over to me and punches my shoulder. "Shut up, dumb ass"
Let me tell you, it wasn't one of those soft girly punches either. "Ow, hey, easy. And what'd I tell ya bout' calling me that," I say while rubbing my shoulder.
"Sorry," she says and walks over to the fire.
I shake my head and walk over to the fire with the deer meat. I pick up a branch and stab it into a hunk of the meat. Holding it over the fire I watch the fat sizzle and the blood drip off as it cooks. After a minute or so the meat is crispy on the edges and no longer pink. I pull the meat out from the flames and hand it out to Grey. She eyes it suspiciously for a moment before she takes it. I pick up another to hunk of meat for myself.
As mine cooks, Grey nibbles on hers. "Ya gotta eat that faster cause we need to get movin'" I say as I pull the meat outta the flames.
"Why," she asks then takes a bigger bit of the meat.
"Not safe to stay in one place," I say as I look off in the distance.
A figure the size of a child slowly stumbles toward us. Annabelle. Why can't she leave me? She always there, always hungry. My heart aches at the sight of her. I think about just endin' her. Just gettin' up and shooting an arrow into her brain. She wouldn't be one of them, she wouldn't be hungry, she wouldn't be there. No. I can't, not yet.
We eat in silence, the whole time I watch Annabelle slowly movin' closer. When she's halfway to us I suddenly stand and start to put the fire out by kickin' dirt into it. Grey stands and watches me in silence.
