Chapter 27 - Uprising Against the Wolf

*Grey's POV*

We move silently through the trees, avoiding any clearings where we could be spotted. The camp has become twice as active since we've broken out of our restraints. Shouts echo around us as they search for their escaped prisoners.

None of this concerns me as I follow behind Baird. Revenge is on my mind. Revenge for murdering Hope, for beating Baird, for whatever they've done to Murphy, for taking us hostage.

"How much further," I ask when we pause behind a tent.

"Just a little more," Baird says while staring straight ahead. "Problem is, we're cut off."

On the other side of the tent stands a group of three, two men and a women. They speak to each other in hushed but tense voices. They seem nervous, like the expect something to attack them, and maybe something is going to.

I weigh the axe in my hand and wonder what the chances are of me getting all three before any of them get to me.

"No," Baird says almost as if he knows what I'm thinking. "You'd get yourself killed. We have to think this through."

I nod. He's right, the chances of me killing all three are rather slim.

"So what do we do?"

"We have to work together. There's three of them and two of us. It looks to me like both men care greatly about the women. If I had to guess ones probably her partner and the others probably her brother. Now killing them isn't going to help at the moment."

"Hostages," I ask.

Baird nods, "and we'll use them to our advantaged. I'll grab the guy closest to us, you get the girl. Hold the axe to her throat, threaten to kill her."

"How do you plan on threatening him?"

Baird pulls a pocketknife out, "found it on the body of the man with the dog."

"Ok," I say while nodding. "and what about the third guy?"

"We have the life of somebody he loves in our hands; he'll do what we say."

"On three then," I ask as I ready the axe in my hands.

Saying nothing Baird nods. He holds up three fingers. Slowly he drops one at a time. When the second one drops I feel my heartbeat quicken as the adrenaline starts to kick in. When the third one drops I race forward.

Everything around me fades away as I focus on getting to the girl. She stands with her back to me talking to the man in front of her. I see his eyes focus on me and hear the girl's confused voice asking, "what is it?"

The man doesn't have time to respond. I have the axe pressed against her throat before he can even open his mouth. The girl makes a startled squeaking noise and goes stiff with fear. Next to me I hear Baird grab the other guy that stood next to the girl.

"Hold still," he growls as he presses the knife against the mans throat. The man struggles for a moment before for he decides to go still.

"Nobody move," I shout.

The man in front of us freezes in place and holds his hands up, "Easy now. Just let them go."

"No it's not going to be that easy," I shout suddenly feeling more confident with the situation. "Your all gonna do what we say or she dies today," I say and push the blade closer to her neck.

"Matt, please just listen to her," the girl whimpers.

The man she called Matt nods. "What do you want," he asks nervously.
